  12. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Luke 8:1–3 - Women accompanying Jesus

  13. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Luke 8:1–3 - Women accompanying Jesus • Luke has more references to the role of women in Jesus’ ministry than any other Gospel, many mentioned explicitly by name.

  14. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things. (Luke 23:49).

  15. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. (Continued).

  16. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again’. Then they remembered his words. (Continued).

  17. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. (Luke 24:1-11).

  18. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. • (Acts 1:14).

  19. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • 1 After this, Jesus travelled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him,

  20. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • 1 After this, Jesus travelled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, • 2 and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out;

  21. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Mary was called Magdalene because she was from Magdala, a city on the western shore of Galilee identified with modern Migdal.

  22. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Seven demons: • Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first (Luke 11:26).

  23. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • The number seven indicates perfection.

  24. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • The number seven indicates perfection. • Mary misidentified with the sinful woman.

  25. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • The number seven indicates perfection. • Mary misidentified with the sinful woman. • Mary Magdalene is not the sister of Martha.

  26. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • The number seven indicates perfection. • Mary misidentified with the sinful woman. • Mary Magdalene is not the sister of Martha. • Mary did not marry Jesus or have his child.

  27. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • 3 Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.

  28. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Both the mention of Joanna wife of the manager of Herod’s household and the report that these women were helping to support them out of their own means indicate that, although Jesus’ ministry was directed primarily to the poor, for as Jesus himself proclaimed: • The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor (Luke 4:18a), some of the wealthy and powerful supported and welcomed it.

  29. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • The phrase many others is feminine in the Greek referring to women who supported Jesus and his disciples.

  30. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Luke 8:4–8 – The Parable of the Sower

  31. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Luke 8:4–8 – The Parable of the Sower • Even though the Promised Land was not as fertile as it once was, agriculture was still extensive in Jesus’ time and it is not surprising that he should use such metaphors in his teaching.

  32. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • 4 While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, he told this parable: • 5 A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up. 6Some fell on rock, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture.

  33. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown. • When he said this, he called out, He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

  34. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • The Sower is the least important component in this parable. • The farmer sows the word (Mark 4:14). • We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away (Hebrews 2:1).

  35. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Aparable is Jesus’ means of communicating truth through a narrative analogy in order to teach a moral or spiritual lesson.

  36. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Birds of the air: • Jesus replied, Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head (Luke 9:58).

  37. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Birds of the air: • Jesus replied, Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head (Luke 9:58). • It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air perched in its branches (Luke 13:19).

  38. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air (Acts 10:12).

  39. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Some fell on the rockperhaps lying beneath a thin layer of soil, but more likely Jesus is referring to an unreceptive heart.

  40. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • A hundred times. The good soil facilitates the growing, increasing and yielding of much fruit.

  41. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • A hundred times. The good soil facilitates the growing, increasing and yielding of much fruit. • Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold, because the LORD blessed him (Genesis 26:12).

  42. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Ears to hear.  • An exhortation to understand and heed the parable as confirmed in Matthew 11:15, 13:9 and 13:43; Mark 4:9, and Luke 14:35. • He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches (Revelation 2:7a).

  43. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Luke 8:9–15 - The purpose of the parables

  44. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Luke 8:9–15 - The purpose of the parables • In his explanation of the parable of the sower, Jesus also explains that parables blind those who have resisted God’s revelation, while helping those who have believed it.

  45. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • 9 His disciples asked him what this parable meant. 10 He said, The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, • ‘though seeing, they may not see; • though hearing, they may not understand’.

  46. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • The knowledge of the secrets of the Kingdom of God has been given to you: • At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure. (Continued).

  47. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • All things have been committed to me by my Father. No-one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no-one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him (Luke 10:21–22).

  48. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. • (Luke 12:32).

  49. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. • (Luke 12:32). • And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me (Luke 22:29).

  50. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Secrets are the mysteries of how the Kingdom of God would operate and are revealed to the disciples.
