  1. Early Cold War Years

Yalta Conference • Before the official end of WWII there were two conferences held. • Yalta Conference- Feb 1945 • U.S.- Roosevelt • Britain- Churchill • USSR- Stalin • Goal: to develop a plan for Post-War Europe • Outcome: a plan to divide Germany into zones and force them to pay back to USSR for damages and loss of life. • The zones would be controlled by U.S., USSR, Britain, and France • Decided to dived Berlin as well

  3. Soviets and U.S after WWII • Americans- suffered 400,000 fatalities • USSR- suffered 50 times the amount of fatalities as the Americans • Cities and factories destroyed • These issues and ideological differences forced the two groups apart and created tension.

  4. Domino Theory Theory of Democratic Governments Believed if one nation became Communist, its neighbors would follow.

Soviets react to the War • After suffering through the brunt of two world wars Russia under the USSR wanted a way to protect itself. • Russia for centuries had feared invasion from the West. • At the end of the war Soviet troops occupied the areas of: • Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Poland, and Yugoslavia. • Stalin at Yalta had agreed to let these countries have free elections • Aka- not force communism on them • He installed communist governments in these areas instead.

  6. Truman vs. Stalin • Truman insisted that Stalin keep his promises from Yalta and allow free elections. • Stalin refused • Stalin would later declare that Communism and Capitalism could not exist in the same world. • Do you agree?

  7. A divided Europe • East vs. West • East- Communist • West- mostly democratic • Germany divided • 4 zones: • Britain, France, U.S. USSR • Britain, France, and U.S would combine their zones. • East Germany= USSR • West Germany= U.S., France, Britain

  8. Iron Curtain • Churchill in 1946- an iron Curtain has divided Germany • One side- Communism has take over • The other side Democratic • Phrase became a trademark of the Cold war to describe Europe’s division during the War. • ACTIVITY- • Complete the worksheet about the Iron Curtain and other Characteristics of the Cold War.
