  7. summary • While the total attendance was not great (~60 in total, ~ 15 in accelerator sessions) the presentations and discussions have been very good and fruitful. • Need to achieve convergence until interims design report

  8. The path to the IDR • Produce a to-do list for each section of the accelerator chain • - What needs to be done until the “freeze” (definition) of design at the IDS-NF plenary meeting in April 2010 • - What are the required steps to be performed after the freeze to prepare the IDR • Define an agreed list of criteria for the decision making process • - List of criteria should be finished by end of • 2009 to start “selection” process early 2010.

  9. Proton driver • Problem : IDS & EURO-WP3 do not cover the proton driver but are relying on a certain parameter set on target. • Update & prioritize proton driver parameter list (December ’09). • Continue discussion with potentially interested hosting labs (until 2012 ?) • Invite presentations on proton driver from labs to April 2010 meeting

  10. Target • LHg baseline • Alternatives under development • Solid • Fluidized powder • Need to evaluate • Baseline & alternatives • How to present work in the IDR • Layout of proton beam dump and splash calculation • Evaluation of safety and radiation issues • Pion production and capture • Yield calculation • Pion Capture (B field - together with muon front end) • Engineering design of capture magnet • Engineering design of Nozzle & mercury handling

  11. Muon front end • Pion production and capture (October’10). • Yield calculation • Pion Capture (B field - togetehr with target) • phase rotation (December’09 ?). • shorter bunch length option • Cooling and Phasen rotation (February’10 ?). • low RF level option • reduced B-field option • surface preparation option • high pressure gas filled cavities • In person meeting planned for mid November 2009 at RAL (just before the target meeting, but may be delayed by one month and moved to BNL)

  12. Linac & RLA • Field optimisation (solenoid & cavity) (November’09). • Particle tracking in LINAC based on Field maps (December’09) • Optimisation of interface RLA1-RLA2 for LENF option (December’09) • Field optimisation (DP & QP & SP ) (Feb ’10). • Particle tracking in RLA1 (March’10) • Benchmarking codes (April ’10). • Update of baseline and lattice freeze (IDS meeting at Fermilab, April’10). • Particle tracking in RLA2 (June ’10). • Conclusions and preliminary cost estimates (at the time of the IDR).

  13. FFAG • Optimisation and update of injection/extraction (December’09). • Injection/extraction in the Nonlinear NS FFAG (December’09). • More tracking studies with errors in the preselected lattices (February’10). • Parallel work on alternative solutions (March’10). • More studies on feasibility of hardware for injection/extraction (March’10). • Update of baseline and lattice freeze out (IDS meeting at Fermilab, April’10). • Preliminary magnet design (June’10). • Tracking studies with errors in realistic field maps (Nufact’10 – October). • Conclusions and preliminary cost estimates (at the time of the IDR).

  14. Decay rings • Compact decay ring design (25 GeV) (December’09). • LENF decay ring design (February ’10) • Studies of RF requirements as function of energy spread and ring design (if both straights are used (February’10) • Beam instrumentation studies • Energy monitor (March’10) • Divergence (May ’10) • Flux (July ‘10) • Preliminary magnet design (June’10) • Tracking studies with errors in realistic field maps (Nufact’10 – August) • Conclusions and preliminary cost estimates (at the time of the IDR)

  15. Further requirements ? • Subtask coordinator should organize meetings (telephone / in person) to - produce criteria list - to organize the subtasks (who is doing what ?) - ensure that convergence goal is reached until April 2010 - All must be aware - mailing list & IDS web page • Subtask coordinator should organize meeting to prepare a consistent parameter list (early 2010) • Organized (additional) engineering support - Starting early 2010 to have first designs available in autumn 2010 to enable first costing starting in autumn. • Attract experts in project costing to help with the IDR

  16. Milestone table

  17. Update milestones table • We (UKNF) need to update the milestones table and add finer granularity to the years • 2010 (in accordance with convergence) • 2011 & 2012 • I sent around the old milestones table please have a look at them and sent me back the update table as soon as possible if you haven’t already done so
