  12. Asking things extra politely Think of questions to ask your partner. - Use the indirect form to ask each. - Take turns asking and answering each other. - Keep talking until time is up.

  16. Discussion • In regular conversation, talk about things you’ve had / gotten someone else (to) do for you. - shopping - work or study - repairs - personal care - etc. - etc.

Jim told me [that] he was planning a party. • Reported Questions EX. “Will you drive me home?” (Du-ho) Du-ho asked if I could drive him home. “Who are you riding to the party with?” (Amy) Amy wanted to know who we were riding to the party with.

  19. Take half of the conversation: • change your dialogue into reported speech (questions) • Are you going to the party tonight? • No, I’m too busy studying for the test. A. What are you doing this weekend? • My family is having a picnic on Saturday. Do you have plans for the weekend? • Not really. But I think I’ll catch up on my homework. • I’ll try to finish mine before the weekend. A. That’s a good idea. What classes do you have to study for? B. I have a homework assignment in History, and I have to study for a quiz in Science.

  20. *wish to - means almost the same as “want to” - much less common EX. “I wish to see the president.” *hope to - used when mentioning possible plans - somewhat common EX. “I hope to see the movie tonight.” hope and wish

  21. Unit 6: We concentrate on wish and hope with relative clauses: EX. “I hope [that] I can see that movie tonight.” “She hopes she gets to travel abroad next vacation. EX. “She wishes [that] you would give her an ‘A’.” “ We wish the government didn’t raise taxes so often.”

  22. Practice • p. 61 D Talk with your partner about each of the subjects listed. - have a short conversation about your hopes and wishes - don’t forget to use 2nd conditionals when appropriate (esp. with wish)
