Grasslands • Grassland biomes are generally large areas of land covered in grass, herbs and flowers. There are a few trees in these lands, but there are many animals , most of them being types of birds. • Grasslands are commonly referred to as prairies in Canada and USA, but other countries have different names for them. • There are two different types of grassland biomes: • Tall grass – more humid and very wet grass areas • Short grass- Dry environment , with hotter summers and colder summers.(Savanna type)
These areas can be found all over the world, including North America, Central Russia, Africa, northern Australia and parts of Asia. • All plants and animals depend on each other in order to survive. • Most animals that live in grasslands are burrowing birds, insects and there’s larger carnivores in the savanna grassland (such as lions, elephants, tigers, zebras , etc..) • The next slide is an example of a savanna food web.

The Food Web • The food web in the previous slide represents Africa. The grassland there is short grass(warmer climate and drier), in other words a Savanna biome. The Vulture and the Bee are both decomposers. The bee decomposes plants and vulture decomposes animals. • The plants that grow in this type of biome are relatively small but there are still some that are tall. • The dry climate causes the animals to herd in order to survive. For a gazelle to survive it has a greater chance of survival in a large group.
