  1. US History: Week 2 Early British Colonies Warm-up 3: Community If you had the opportunity to create your own school community, what type of features would it have?

  2. US History: Early British Colonies Objectives: Why did British Colonists come to the US? Identify 2 examples of British Colonists struggling in Virginia How did British Colonists deal with the struggles? (Give one example)

Jamestown, Virginia • Jamestown- (1607) 1st English city in present day US • Virginia Company- in charge of Jamestown • *Goal- make money (find gold like Spanish) • Disastrous start- settlers died in huge numbers • (WHY?) • Gentlemen Settlers- they did not know how to live in the wild (kill food, build homes) • Looked for gold- not food • Disease- town is in a swamp with mosquitoes

Tobacco- Native American crop popular in Europe • *Tobacco made Jamestown profitable (Drug trade makes $ too just like gold) • New settlers- people wanted to move to Jamestown to make money and cheap/free land • Headright system- free land for new arrivals • If people couldn’t afford payment to come here, how do you think they would pay? • Indentured servant- person to poor to pay for trip, had cost of trip paid in return for 3-5 years labor

  6. With the chance to start a new life, there’s one problem….

  7. *Shortage of people/labor required incentives for people to move to Americas • Problems for settlers- as more people came, available land moved farther inland • *Caused clashes with Indians • Bacon’s Rebellion- (1676) former indentured servants riot and burn down Jamestown • *Wanted more protection against Indians from local government • **Importance- created a need to find a less troublesome, cheap labor source • What would be a perfect replacement for indentured servants? • SLAVES!

New England- settled by English looking for religious freedom (Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island) • Puritans- wanted to purify/fix the Church of England (make it less Catholic), treated harshly by King in England • Pilgrims- Puritans who wanted to separate from the Church of England, sailed on Mayflower and landed on Plymouth (1620) • *Both wanted to create a model Christian society in Americas based on THEIR BELIEFS (did not want people or religions who were different)

  12. *problems with Indians- Puritains felt Indians were in the way, lots of clashes • Rhode Island- only New England colony with religious freedom • Roger Williams- founder, kicked out of Massachusettes • Indians- felt Indians should be paid if kicked off land • Religious Freedom- thought government should not follow church laws
