  1. Cigarettes’ Environmental Impact

  2. Overview • Main Focus: CO2 emissions • Global Impact • My Impact • Furthering the study: other means of impact • Production • Litter • Review • Ways to Mitigate

  3. CO2 Emissions • Estimate that 2,600 tonnes (2.6 million kilograms) of CO2 are emitted every year by cigarettes • Estimated 43.8 million smokers in the USA and estimated 1 billion smokers in the world • US proportion of emissions/year = 11.18 tonnes (11,180 kg) • My emissions/year = 2.6 E -6 tonnes or 0.0026 kilotons

  4. Perspective • Emission by three major energy sources: • Petrol: 1 US gallon emits 8.824 kg of CO2 • Diesel: 1 US gallon emits 10.439 kg of CO2 • Crude Oil: 1 barrel emits 317 kg of CO2 • This means 1 tonne of CO2 is created by: • Petrol: 113.33 gallons • Diesel: 95.3 gallons • Crude Oil: 3.15 barrels

  5. Furthering the Study • Before smoking: • 600 millions trees are cut down every year • Weak crop • Chemical waste • Green Tobacco Sickness • After smoking: • Litter from Cigarettes • 4.5 trillion cigarette butts per year • Impact on fish and animal life • Any given 12 years

  6. Environmental Impact Review • Concrete • CO2 • Deforestation • Litter • Non-measureable • Pesticides and fertilizer • Chemical waste • Green Tobacco Sickness • Fish and Animals

  7. Ways to Cutback Impact • Quit (duh) • E cigarettes • Nicotine patch • Sin tax • Always throw out butts
