3. Why should we wash our hands? Did you know that the most important thing you can do to avoid being ill is to wash you hands? Every time you touch something with your hands, you can pick up germs (bacteria, viruses & fungi) from it. Even if your hands look clean, they may not be because germs and bacteria are tiny and invisible to the naked eye. The next time you touch something you could then pass on these germs to someone else. These germs and bacteria can make your poorly, for example giving you coughs and colds or upset tummies. So to stop germs spreading, you need to WASH YOUR HANDS

4. Meet The Germs Edward & Emily would like to introduce you to some of the germs that you could have on your hands and explain how they could make you ill. Swine Flu Sid (Swine Flu) Colin Cold (Common cold ) These two viruses are passed from person to person by coughing and sneezing. You can also get these by touching something that an infected person has touched.

5. Meet The Germs Nora Virus (Norovirus – Winter vomiting virus) Mr SA (M.R.S.A.) This is a very contagious virus and is passed from person to person on dirty hands after going to the toilet or touching something that an infected person has touched. This virus causes sickness and diarrhoea. This is a bacteria found on the skin and in noses. It causes infections in people who are very young (babies), very old or already ill.

6. Meet The Germs Swine Flu Sid (Swine Flu) Carla Bacter (Campylobacter) These two bacteria are found in tummies and are passed from person to person on dirty hands after going to the toilet. These bacteria cause sickness and diarrhoea.

7. When should we wash our hands? It is impossible to avoid germs, viruses and bacteria in your daily life but you can reduce the chance of infecting yourself and others by knowing when hands should be washed. It is important to wash your hands After using the toilet Before and after eating After playing outside or gardening If your hands look dirty If you are suffering from a cough or a cold, you will need to wash your hands more often. Even if your hands appear to be clean they may still carry germs capable of causing illness.
