Sanctification by the Spirit: Part 2

In this passage from Galatians 5:18-21, we learn that if we are led by the Spirit, we are not under the Law. The passage also highlights the deeds of the flesh and warns against practicing such things, as they will prevent us from inheriting the Kingdom of God.

Gal 5:18-21 Sanctification is by the Spirit: Part 2 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. 19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, 21 envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

  2. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. But if (assuming) you are led by the Spirit, (then) you are not under the Law. you are led - agō - to bear, bring, carry, lead note: present tense – passive voice see Rom 8:14 by the Spirit - lit. by means of the Spirit see Gal 5:16 -17 you are – eimi – the state in which someone or some thing continuously exist under the Law – lit. under law – this is law as a principle see Rom. 6:14

  4. 19b which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20a idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, which are– for example immorality - fornication - illicit sexual intercourse impurity – uncleanness, sexual sins sensuality - absence of restraint, indecency, wantonness -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- idolatry – putting seen things before the unseen God sorcery – the use of drugs in sorcery ----------------------------------------------------------------------- enmities – hatred - hostilities

  5. 19b which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20a idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, which are (cont.) strife - quarrel, contention, wrangling jealousy – hostile feeling due to what others have outbursts of anger - hot anger, passion disputes - self-seeking, rivalry dissensions - indicating division factions - heresy leading to schism (division)

  6. 21a envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, which are (cont.) envying – the desire to have what others have -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- drunkenness - denotes drunkenness, habitual intoxication carousing - feastings and drunkenness with impurity and obscenity -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- and things like these – shows that this is not an exhaustive list

  7. 21b of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. of which I forewarn you I forewarn - prolegō - to declare openly, plainly, to say or tell beforehand (pro - before, legō - to say) see 1 Thess 3:4, 2 Cor 13:2 just as I have forewarned you, I have forewarned - proeirō - to say before, foretell, speak of in advance see Gal 1:9, 2 Cor 13:2

  8. 21b of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. that those who practice such things who practice - prassō - to do, make, perform in general, expressing an action as continued or not yet completed, what one does repeatedly, continually, habitually see 2 Cor 12:21, Rom 2:1-3 will not inherit the kingdom of God. inherit - klēronomeō - to be an heir, to inherit, obtain for an inheritance by casting lots as the children of Israel did for the promised land see 1 Cor 6:9-11
