  1. How to Prevent the Flu this Winter Flu season has officially arrived in Australia! While you can contract the flu anytime, the season is typically in the colder months between May and October. The flu - or influenza - is a highly contagious disease and everyone is doing everything in their power not to contract it. Try to pay attention to prevent catching the flu this winter. You can’t regulate the outside environment such as school or office, but you can control what is at home. Prepare your flu essentials at home and stock up on products to have on hand during this winter to prevent the flu. What is the flu? The flu is an illness of the respiratory system caused by the influenza virus. These virus affects the throat, nose and lungs. It is important to note that the flu is not the same as a common cold. The flu is a condition that acts much faster and more severely. It can lead to secondary complications like bronchitis, pneumonia, organ damage, ear infections etc. The flu is very contagious and is easily be transmitted from person to person. When an infected person sneezes or coughs, the tiny droplets released into the air, can be breathed in by someone else. It can also be spread when this person touches a surface that has been contaminated with the virus and touches their mouth, nose or eyes. What are the flu symptoms? There are several symptoms of the flu you should beware of: Fever Runny nose

  2. Sneezing Cough, sore throat Muscle aches and chills Fatigue Typically, the symptoms of flu usually start from about 1 to 3 days after catching the flu. These symptoms can, however, last for a week or even more. While some people are only slightly affected, the flu can cause more serious illnesses in some cases. Are you at risk? Scientific studies have shown that flu can affect people of all ages. However, the high-risk category that contracts the illness are seniors, pregnant women, babies and infants who haven’t developed their full immunity system yet. Others that are at risk are those with underlying health issues such as a heart disease, respiratory diseases such as asthma or COPD or people with compromised immune system issues like diabetics. Is it possible to prevent the flu? Considering the severe complications that can arise from flu, preventing getting it is the best way around the illness. The best tool you have for preventing the flu is getting the flu vaccine each year. You can get vaccinated from as early as 6 months of age. For those who fall into the high-risk category it is even more important to get vaccinated. Another way to prevent the spread of flu is by keeping to hygienic practices. Some tips to achieving this include; 1.Wash your hands regularly or use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser to keep germs at bay 2.Keep surfaces clean to get rid of germs 3.Cover your mouth and nose in your elbow when sneezing and coughing 4.Throwing away your tissues in the bin immediately after using them 5.Try to avoid sharing cups, cutlery, plates or towels with others 6.Eat a healthy diet

  3. What can help alleviate the flu? In case you do get the flu, go and see your GP. The treatment he or she may prescribe is an antiviral medication. These can alleviate some of the symptoms and duration of the flu virus. Note that antibiotics do not help to treat cold or flu as they are caused by viruses. Antibiotics only work for bacteria infections. If you get down with the flu, make sure to sleep a lot, drink plenty of water and other fluids and keep warm.
