  2. What is a Philosophy of Teaching? A philosophy of teaching is a personal statement that clearly explains (1) why (2) how (3) what you teach or plan to teach.

  3. Hints Remember your audience: • Who will be reading your philosophy? • For what purpose will it be read? Address the intended audience.

  4. Hints • Avoid jargon • Get to the point • One page is plenty • Be concrete & give specific examples • Be art specific if seeking an art-teaching job • Use action verbs

  5. More hints • Use a professional font • APA is the accepted style • Double space • A philosophy of teaching art is organic and should change as you change

  6. Brainstorm • What are your objectives as an art teacher? • What are your objectives for your students? • What do you like best about teaching? About art teaching?

  7. Brainstorm • Describe your teaching style or methods (e.g., what learning theories do you use? How do you use them? • Describe a theme that runs through your teaching. • Why did you decide to become an art teacher? • Why is art or art teaching important to you?

  8. Brainstorm • What or who has influenced you to be an art teacher? • How will you improve in the future?

  9. Write it! Paragraph 1 Make a clear and concise statement about your teaching objectives or why you want to teach. Support your statement with at least two reasons.

  10. Paragraph 2 Describe something unique about your teaching style that will make you stand apart from other candidates. Paragraph 3 Close with a few more hints about your teaching style.

  11. Remember that as you grow and change, so should your philosophy of teaching.
