  1. Warm up: Get out *Blue signature *gold signature *science notebook *pencil (everything else put away!)

  2. You and Your Science Notebook And other related things

  3. First Things First • Locate your science notebook. • Get out your science notebook. • Set your science notebook directly in front of you. • Make eye contact with your science notebook. • Greet your science notebook with a firm handshake. • Inform your science notebook that the pair of you are going to be best friends.

  4. Okay, this one you actually need to do. • Glue the first page of your notebook to the front cover. • Number the pages of your notebook. • YES. Every single page. • Put your numbers in the outside corner of the top margin • The glued page will be numbered 0.

  5. 1 0 This first page should be glued to the front cover of your notebook.

  6. Let’s Label! • Label page 0, the one you glued to the front cover, “GEMS of Wisdom” in the top margin. • This is where you’re going to put some important information!

  7. 0 Gems of Wisdom This is what your page should look like and this is the information you need to include. Ms. Coe’s E-mail: mcoe@columbiak12.org WMS Website: http://www.cpsk12.org/Page/69 Ms. Coe’s Website: http://www.cpsk12.org/domain/3477

  8. Table of Contents • Label the next page “Table of Contents.” • You will record all of our learning objectives on this page. • You’ll see this abbreviated T.O.C. • Draw a line down the center of the page, or fold it in half. • All activities you record on the left side of your notebook will go in the left column, all activities you record on the right side of your notebook will go in the right column. • Reserve four pages (front and back) in the front of your notebook for the Table of Contents.

  9. 1 Table of Contents: _________ Unit • Left-Side Items Right-Side Items • 0 Gems of Wisdom 1 Table of Content: Space • 2 3 • 4 5 • 7 • 8 9 Here is what the Table of Contents should look like in your notebook. Fold Here Remember to save four pages in the front for your T.O.C.

  10. Warm Up Turn to a neighbor and discuss your opinion on the following: There are other living beings in our solar system.

  11. Contents: the Right-Side • This is where all your science notes, vocabulary, and labs will be placed. • Flip to page 9 of your notebook (remember we have to save room for your T.OC. in the front) • Fold the page in half, all the way to the spiral of your notebook. • Notes will go in the right column • Questions will go in the left column • Summary will go along the bottom • All notes for a day will go on the same page number. This way, we’re always on the same page! • If you run out of room, we’ll add on loose-leaf.

  12. Page Number Learning Objective Questions about notes, important vocabulary Class Notes 2 1/2” 3 to 4 sentence summary across the bottom of the day’s notes

  13. Right-Side Example (Diagram copied during lecture) (Questions about it ) • How do the ticks find the cattle? • Why don’t the ticks usually kill their host? • How could tick infestations in cattle impact humans?

  14. Anthropods Eighth Grade Biology Notes

  15. Contents: the Left-Side • This is for all your activities that review the concepts, vocabulary, and information you have recorded on the right-side. • Basically, it’s to help you better understand science! • For each right-side you have completed, you will do an activity to go along with it. • Some activities include: • Drawing (from diagrams to cartoons) • Writing poetry or short stories • Developing a poster • And so many others!

  16. Page Number You’ll use this whole page to complete an assigned activity!

  17. Why take notes? • Cornell note taking stimulates critical thinking skills. • Note taking helps you remember what is said in class. • A good set of notes can help you work on assignments and prepare for tests outside of the classroom.

  18. Why take notes? • Good notes allow you to help each other problem solve. • Good notes help you organize and process data and information. • Good notes help you recall information Writing is a great tool for learning!

  19. Understanding How We LearnBut of course we must talk about science, after all it’s a science class! Our brain’s outer layer, where higher level thinking occurs, has 100 billion brain cells or neurons. The brain’s outer layer is called the neocortex.

  20. When We Learn Something New: • A dendrite, a threadlike branch, grows out of each brain cell.

  21. Learning • When a dendrite from one neuron grows close enough to the dendrite of another neuron, a connection is made. • Learning = growth and the connecting of dendrites.

  22. Practice! • If you practice a new skill many times, the dendrites get coated in a protein called myelin. • Thinking can now occur more quickly, & you will remember the skill for a long time.

  23. How We Forget • If we only practice a skill once or twice the connection between neurons is weak. • If you do not practice the skill again the dendrites wither & die. • You have forgotten the new skill!

  24. What goes where? Don’t forget the heading: Name, Class, Period, Date, Topic Questions, Important vocabulary, etc. go here, in the left hand column. Notes go here, in the large right hand column. A 3 to 4 sentence summary down there on the bottom of the last page of notes

  25. How do I come up with questions? • Meet Bob Costas. Bob will give you a “Costa’s Level of Thinking” to guide you as you make a question. We’ll talk more about these later!

  26. When taking notes, always remember to SLANT • Sit in front • Lean forward • Ask questions • Nod • Take notes & Talk to teacher after class

  27. Remember This notebook is everything you’ll need in this class to be successful! Bring it every day. EVERY DAY! Update it daily, especially T.O.C. (and remind me to update mine, also!) You never know when there could be a notebook check…

  28. Time to Personalize • Your cover must include the following things: • Your name • Your science core • A science related image • A school-appropriate image that represents you • Make it snazzy and unique!
