Improve Diagnosis and Compensation … • Decentralise BME’s to Designated Provincial Health Facilities • GP Contracted to Provide Service • Introduced Affidavits for Labour Histories • Challenges: • Abuse of Affidavits • Verifying Dependants (Autopsy Certifications) • Reliable Contact Addresses of Claimants (Traditional Leaders) • Manual Info Management (Computerisation)

Improve Diagnosis and Compensation … • Environmental Exposure • Fraud: Staff, Banks, Communities • 1998 – Date (Diagnosed: 5754, Compensated: 2318) • Awaiting direction from conclusions of forensic audit with labour history problems • Recent Amendments to ODMWA • Limit charges by reps to 0.5% of compensation award

Education of Health Professionals • Course by NCOH • Info Booklets Developed with Universities • Participate in OH Courses by MBOD • Participation by OH Professionals in SORDSA Programme • DOH Sponsored OH Courses for Public Health Care Providers • Improve Quality of Care: research on Disease Burden with UCT • Linking compensation to DSD System • (Challenge: CCOD Compensation is once off payments only)

  6. Overall Challenge • Ratification of the Compensation System as per Cabinet Decision in December 1999 • Draft Policy Framework to Cabinet • Action to be related to Poverty Alleviation: Rehabilitation of Contaminated to Support Life Again _________________________
