  2. What are my options? • Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Maths, Geology…. • Medicine and Veterinary • Analytical testing (Research and Development) • Food manufacturing • Engineering • Contract Laboratory testing • Utility companies (water and electricity) • Petrochemicals, Materials Science • Agriculture, Mining • Cosmetics, Perfumes and Personal products • Education

  3. How do I get there? • Think about what to study • Think about getting practical experience: volunteering, unpaid internships, summer placements and work experience weeks. • On the job training • Trainee Schemes • Apprenticeships • University

  4. Overview of RSSL • We have been in operation since 1987 • We have two sites based on Reading University campus • We employ ~300 staff within our different laboratories • Mondelēz International are our parent company, we work for them and for other companies as well

  5. How do RSSL use Science? • Our analysts use laboratory skills to check the quality of food, pharmaceuticals and healthcare products… • They use Science to solve our customers problems and help them develop new products…

  6. What techniques do we use? • Light Microscopy • Wet Chemistry • X-ray microanalysis • Gas and Liquid Chromatography • Infra-Red and UV visible spectroscopy • Particle Size Distribution • Endotoxins • ELISA and Polymerase Chain Reaction

  7. Wet Chemistry • Quality control of Pharmaceutical raw materials and API’s (Active Pharmaceutical ingredients) • pH • Limit tests (Arsenic, Lead, Iron, Sulphate, chlorides, aldehydes) • Assay • Identification tests • Moisture analysis • Glass vials and rubber closure testing

  8. Instrumental Analysis Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy • Looks at behaviour of atoms in a magnetic field to provide structural information • Used to look at mixtures or extracted compounds • Capsule found in bottle of water

  9. Material Characterisation NMR Spectroscopy - Ibuprofen

  10. CV – Emma Kelliher Education • A Levels – Biology and Domestic Science. • ONC Physical Sciences –Reading college. • HNC Chemistry(day release)–Thames Valley University. Employment • BoehringerIngelheim– Quality control Analyst (1988-1996) • Career break (Had three children), also worked as a Dispenser in Boots Chemist (1996-2003). • Maiden Erleigh School technician (2003-2008). • RSSL – Scientist II, Pharmaceutical chemistry (2008-Present).

  11. Careers at RSSL • Trainee Scientist scheme – students who have completed A-Levels • Internships – for those studying science at university • Graduate roles • Full time roles in various laboratories and support services • Where could you work?
