  7. Fire Danger Warning On average, over ten thousand fire incidents occur in Hong Kong every year, killing or injuring more than 600 people. Most of the fires are caused by carelessness or negligence. For example, the number of hill fires increases by 50% on weekends and public holidays, as more people visit the rural areas and the countryside.

  8. Rainstorm Warning System The rainy season in Hong Kong is normally between April and September. Rain could be particularly heavy and persistent during May and June, causing severe traffic disruption and on occasions major floods and landslips resulting in casualties.

  9. Thunderstorm Warning Thunderstorms commonly occur in spring and summer months in Hong Kong. On average, thunderstorms are reported at the Hong Kong Observatory in 5 days per month during April to September.

  10. The Public Weather Service The Hong Kong Observatory was first established in 1883 to provide a time service and to make meteorological and magnetic observations. Weather forecasts for the public first appeared in the daily publication, "China Coast Meteorological Register", in January 1895. Broadcasting of weather information to the public was introduced in the 1930's. Since then, the Hong Kong Observatory has evolved substantially and is now providing wide ranging services to the general public and a number of special users.

  11. The Strong Monsoon Signal The Strong Monsoon Signal is issued when winds associated with the summer or winter monsoon are blowing in excess of or are expected to exceed 40 kilometres per hour near sea level anywhere in Hong Kong. Winter monsoon normally blows from the north or from the east while summer monsoon typically blows from the southwest. In very exposed places, monsoon winds may exceed 70 kilometres per hour.
