  2. The Respiratory System • 1. Functions of the Respiratory System • To enrich the blood and supply the cells and subsequently the body with oxygen for cellular respiration. • To remove toxic carbon dioxide, produced by cellular respiration, from the blood and body.

  3. Structure of the respiratory System • Lungs - Large paired organs in the thoracic cavity. • Bronchi – Tubes branching from the trachea which carry air to and from the lungs. They continue to branch into smaller secondary and tertiary bronchi and finally into bronchioles. This network is often referred to as the bronchial tree. • Alveoli – Tiny sacs in the lungs that are the site of gaseous exchange. http://www.smm.org/heart/lungs/top.html

  4. Structure of the Respiratory System • Alveoli – Tiny sacs in the lungs that are the site of gaseous exchange.

  5. Respiratory Function • .Respiration involves the following processes; • Pulmonary ventilation – movement of air into the alveoli. • Pulminary diffusion – exchange of gases in the blood • Transportation of Gases - movement of gases in the blood to the cells • Internal respiration – exchange of gases from the blood to the cells
