  1. Adv Graphical Enablement • In this presentation… • Working with color schemes. • Working with newlook filters. • Tips to assist recognition of the iSeries 5250 data stream.

  2. Adv Graphical Enablement – Color Schemes • Sets of category overrides • Color schemes • Host color to • GUI color • Set the graphicalcolors and fonts

  3. Adv Graphical Enablement – Color Schemes • Convert host colors to GUI colors schemes • Host color to • GUI color • For each category • Font • Name, size, bold, italic and underline. • Foreground color • 1 GUI color for each of the 8 host colors. • Background color • 1 GUI color for each of the 8 host colors. Host Colors Black Blue Green Cyan Red Magenta Yellow White

  4. Categories Background Check Field Entry Field Field Choice Field Prompt Fixed (Entry Capable) Fixed (Protected) Function Key Help Text Hover Color Instruction Menu Heading Menu Item Adv Graphical Enablement – Color Schemes • Message • Multi-Line Entry Field • Option Field • Output Field • Push Button • Screen Info • Screen Title • Subfile Data • Subfile Data Alternate • Subfile Entry Field • Subfile Heading • Subfile Option • Unknown (Entry Capable • Unknown (Protected) • URL

  5. Adv Graphical Enablement – Filters • Filters • A filter is a generic pattern or rule based mechanism designed to provide system wide dynamic overrides, e.g. text such as “Press Enter to Continue” can be scanned for and replaced with substitution text like “Click OK to Continue”. • Filters instruct newlook how to interpret the execution time data stream and therefore generate the newlook UI. • Pattern recognition • Host text/category to • GUI text/category

  6. Adv Graphical Enablement – Filters • Filters • Using filters will reduce the number of overrides significantly. • Development approach • DDS (original iSeries application) • Filters • Generic overrides • Specific overrides • Specific overrides with a filter

  7. Adv Graphical Enablement – Filters • Search properties • Match string • Type of match • Exact match • Portion • Occurrences • Once per screen • Many times per screen but once per field • Many times

  8. Adv Graphical Enablement – Filters • Range properties • Row range • Column range • Improve efficiency • Limit the filter to a particular area.

  9. Adv Graphical Enablement – Filters • Action properties • Replace string • Text • Portion • Identify category • This field. • The one after this field. • The one before this field.

  10. Adv Graphical Enablement – Recognition Tips • Recognition tips • Use Identify and Filters to override default recognition information and assist correct recognition of the 5250 data stream. • Categories • Identifying the cause of recognition errors is much simpler if you have a solid understanding of categories and how they are assigned. • Categories are assigned to all iSeries screen elements. • You can view an iSeries screen element’s category in Identify by right-clicking on an element. • A list of categories used in the recognition process can be viewed via the Categories tab on the Rules dialog. • Contextual recognition • Discovering the cause of recognition errors

  11. Adv Graphical Enablement – Recognition Tips • Adding visual clues to assist recognition • Add attribute bytes to correct alignment problems. • The 3 space rule • The 3 space rule helps resolve alignment issues. If 3 spaces exist between text, then newlook treats each as an individual field. • Menu recognition patterns • Decide on screen level or global level menu recognition. • Decide on screen level or global level category recognition. • Popup window generation • Based on an unbroken rectangular border. • Learn how to add border sets via the Rules dialog.

  12. Adv Graphical Enablement – Recognition Tips • Spacing issues • When there is not enough space on the iSeries screen or Identify, then either add: • List values or choices (using Designer). • Visual clues (using Identify). • Pattern recognition to replace text (using Filters).

  13. Summary • Customizable color schemes are available for 28 different screen categories. • Use Filters to create system wide dynamic changes. Filters are quite useful in reducing the number of screen specific filters. • Filters involve searching and replacing screen text or assigned categories.
