What is the AAPI-2? • It is self-administered - 40 item parenting attitude measure, taken pre- and post-services (Part A & B), and each statement is rated on a 5 point likert scale. • Potential uses….. • To assess the changes in parenting &child rearing practices after treatment. • To assess the parenting & child rearing attitudes of prospective or new parents. • To assess the degree of readiness and/or the level of understanding of parenting &child rearing attitudes of adolescents. • To assess the parenting & child rearing attitudes of prospective employees for child care staff, teacher aides, residential care staff &volunteers. • To screen and train prospective foster parent applicants. www.assessingparenting.com http://nurturingparenting.com/images/cmsfiles/aapionlinehandbook12-5-12.pdf

What about parenting does the AAPI-2 measure? • Expectations of Children – indicates degree caregiver understands developmental expectations of a child, their perception of a caregiver as positive & supportive in child’s life. • Empathy Towards Children’s Needs – measures whether caregiver can understand values & needs of children, that they have feelings – understands this does not equate with “spoiling” a child. • Use of Corporal Punishment –indicates degree to which caregiver views physical punishment as important & relied upon means to discipline children –degree to which a parent may be controlling, demanding, or authoritarian. • Parent-Child Family Roles – degree to which caregivers & parents understand their role – & therefore do not expect children to fulfill needs; parents take ownership over their own behavior. • Children’s Power and Independence – degree to which caretaker allows child independence & encourages children to express views, but with cooperation.

Caution: interpreting scores • According to authors: • A battery of assessment strategies is recommended to gather information on several aspects of functioning & parenting. • Despite the AAPI’s validity and reliability, info from one inventory is not nearly as valid as information gathered from several sources. • The AAPI-2 is not a predictor of future abusive parenting beliefs but rather an assessment of current parenting beliefs & attitudes. • As time passes, individuals change & so do the conditions under which one would parent. http://nurturingparenting.com/images/cmsfiles/aapionlinehandbook12-5-12.pdf
