  3. The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes • What is the relationship between Bess and the highwayman? Between Bess and the Tim the ostler? • The highwayman plans to return the next morning unless there’s a problem. What might cause him a problem? • How did the redcoats know that the highwayman was returning to Bess? • There is a strong rhythm to this poem. What sound is the rhythm supposed to mimic? • What would be a good theme for this story?

Gentlemen of the Road by Mara Rockliff • Why did the poor live in such miserable conditions? • The article talked about the “haves” and the “have-nots.” With such a huge difference between them, what problem developed because of this? • Since the highwaymen were such “gentlemen,” how did a robbery usually go? • What is the author’s TONE about highwaymen in this article? • Did the highwaymen succeed in making any social changes in their time?
