Reform • To change. Period of time in U.S. history where groups and individuals sought to change social problems.
Abolition • To end • Movement to abolish(end) slavery in the U.S.
Temperance • Movement to outlaw the use of alcohol. • Argued that alcohol destroyed families, led to violence and crime and kept people in poverty.
Transcendentalism • American literature, art, and music movement that focused on nature and American culture.
Prison Reform • Movement to change the treatment of prisoners.
Public Education • Open more institutions of higher learning • Open schools to more people including women and poor people.
Religious • New religious groups were formed in the U.S. & others grew • Mormons* • Shakers • Baptists • Methodists • Adventists • Presbyterian
Treatment of mentally ill, disabled, sick • Mentally ill, disabled, and sick people were often treated the same as criminals and locked away. • Began a movement to treat people humanely.
Labor • Work • Labor unions attempted to improve the working conditions and wages of employees. • Child labor was their main concern.
