HAPP Targets the Indonesian Sex Trade • Primary goal • Increase condom use among sex workers and their clients • Three demonstration areas • Concentrations of sex workers in red light areas in Jakarta and Surabaya, more scattered in northern port towns of Manado and Bitung • Nearly half of CSWs between the ages of 15 and 24 (increasing trend) • Sex clients are “everyman” from all walks of life The Futures Group International

The Consortium of Concerned Condom Manufacturers • Indonesian condom industry has capacity to serve the market and was interested in a targeted effort to reach the sex trade (and young people) • FUTURES helped form the Consortium of Concerned Condom Manufacturers • Two local condom manufacturers: PT Vonix Latexindo and Rajawali Nusindo (RNI) • One multinational: London International Group • Consortium offered a “cafeteria” of condom brands at varying price levels in an effort to segment the market The Futures Group International

Sex Workers and Clients Increase Condom Use • In one year, condom use among CSWs rose 30 percent • More than one-third of men surveyed in red light areas said they used condoms because they felt personally at risk of STD infection Surabaya sex workers hold condom promotion posters.
