  1. What would cause or stop a person from getting involved in an emergency situation? What is the Good Samaritan Emergency Response Act (N.J.S.A. 2A:62A-1)

  2. The New Jersey Good Samaritan Law is designed to protect individuals from any liability for damages who voluntarily attempt to give medical assistance to those in need. The law also allows people to report a possible drug overdose without fear of being arrested themselves. It encourages and protects bystanders, including doctors and paramedics, at an accident scene to render assistance to someone in need without fear of being sued if things go wrong

  3. Your role as a first aid rescuer • Recognize that an emergency exists • Make sure the scene is safe for you and the ill or injured person • Call 9-1-1 • Provide care until someone with more advanced training arrives and takes over

  4. Asking to Give First Aid • Introduce yourself as a first aid provider before you touch the person • Ask if you may help • If the person agrees, give first aid • If the person refuses, call 9-1-1 and stay with them until help arrives • If the person is confused or cannot answer, assume the person wants help Maintain the First Aid Kit

  5. Key Steps of First Aid Assess the scene Phone for help Take universal precautions Find the problem Protect the person’s privacy

  6.
