  1. The Global Gender and Climate Alliance Bringing Women to Global Climate Change Negotiations and beyond

  2. Introduction • The GGCA was formed in December 2007 during the UNFCCC COP in Bali. • The founding partners are IUCN, UNDP, UNEP and WEDO and today the alliance has 30 partners composed of UN agencies, NGOs, international organizations. • Members of the GGCA bring lessons learned from exiting projects to the global arena to influence global climate change policy and decision-making GGCA 2009

  3. The overall objective of GGCA is to ensure that climate change policies, decision-making, and initiatives at the global, regional, and national levels are gender responsive GGCA 2009

  4. Why was GGCA established? • Global policies and strategies on climate change do not take a gender perspective into account. • UN financing mechanisms on climate change do not address the needs of poor women and men equitably. • Global standards or criteria are needed to guide the incorporation of gender principles and tools into climate change initiatives. • Limited capacity exists to design and implement gender-responsive climate change policies, strategies and programmes. • There is a need for coordinated and consolidated information, tools, and data on the theme of gender and climate change across institutions and countries. GGCA 2009

  5. Focus Areas: • Integrate a gender perspective into global policy and decision making in order to ensure that the UN mandates on gender equality are fully implemented. • Ensure that UN financing mechanisms on mitigation and adaptation address the needs of poor women and men equitably. • Set standards and criteria for climate change mitigation and adaptation that incorporate gender equality and equity principles. • Build capacity at global, regional and local level to design and implement gender-responsive climate change policies, strategies and programmes. • Establish a network for learning, knowledge exchange and advocacy on gender and climate change.
