The Thirty Years’ War • The Holy Roman Empire is shrinking • Since the 1450’s, power is concentrated in the Hapsburg family • In 1618, officials tried to shut down Protestant churches in Prague and got thrown out a window • Bavaria and Austria rebelled against the Emperor • Spain (members of the Hapsburg family) joined the war • France hated Spain, so they got involved • Denmark and Sweden chimed in • In 1648, the Treaty of Westphalia was signed • The Holy Roman Empire was weakened and the states (such as Austria and Prussia) were strengthened • Austria (Hapsburgs) hated Prussia (Hohenzollerns) • In 1740, they went at it again; this was called the War of the Austrian Succession • Prussia became more powerful, and tensions rose between Austria and Hungary
