  1. Jefferson Era: Pirates - Tecumseh

  2. What were the challenges to the Nation’s stability during the late 1700s and early 1800’s

  3. The Barbary Coast Northern Africa has an area known as the “Barbary Coast” This area was inhabited by Muslim pirates known as Berbers These pirates demanded protection money from countries for safe passage Most countries just paid the money, believing it was cheaper than going to war with them

  4. War with Tripoli In 1801 the ruler of Tripoli asked for more money, and Jefferson refused. War had begun. Jefferson sent ships to blockade Tripoli, but there were complications in the conflict In 1805 peace was declared, with the US paying $60,000 for prisoners, but Tripoli agreed to end the tribute payments It is not until 1815 that the tribute payments stop completely.

  5. Tensions Rising Both Britain and France were sick of “American Neutrality” and announced they would be searching all ships trading with the other country The British continued with their policy of impressment, which angered Americans The British warship Leopardtried to stop the American vessel Chesapeake, and when the Chesapeake refused opened fire, killing 3 Americans. This led to a huge Anti-British movement across America

  6. The Embargo Act An embargo is a banning of trade with a country The Embargo Act banned trade with all foreign countries! (Not just Britain and France) This caused the American economy to plummet It also failed to cause any real harm to Britain and France, defeating the purpose of the act.

  7. Election of 1808 Madison vs. Pinckney The Federalist hoped that the failure of the Embargo Act would swing votes in their favor However, the Democratic-Republicans continued their dominance Madison won 122-47

  8. Tecumseh As Americans continued to push westward they encountered more and more tribes of Native Americans A Shawnee chief named Tecumseh began to unite many of the tribes out west (Modern day Illinois, Indiana, Michigan) Tecumseh traveled south to bring more tribes into his confederation, but while he was away William Henry Harrison (the governor of the territory) attacked. The Battle of Tippecanoe was a victory for the Americans, but it pushed the Native Americans into allying with the British
