  5. Bone formation Bones consist of microscopic mature bone cells Bone marrow Oste/o/cytes Osteo = bone Cyte = cell

Ossification… • occurs when minerals replace previously formed cartilage and while long bones are growing in length • As bones ossify, they become hard • The ossification process begins from the center of a bone and moves to the ends of the bone • Infants bones are soft and pliable because of ‘incomplete ossification’

  7. Example of Ossification The soft spot on a baby’s head called, the fontanel is a familiar example of where bone has not formed yet, although it will over time, as well as become hardened.
