EARLN-FMD Activities in 2011 - trainings • Sampling technics to Vets and Technicians in Burundi • Tanzania EUFMD/FAO RT-PCR (convand rt) and IZSLER ELISA to all network member countries • Batch 1 (N.Sud, Eth, Djb, Ken, Ug, Rwn, Bur, Tz) done • Batch 2 to be conducted later • Vaccine matching to Kenya (2 Vets trained in Nov.2011) Embakasi – virus isolation and conc, VNT & LPBE done, RT-PCR setup – partially completed • Series of Nakuru Training Courses (NTC) to Kenya and other FMD free countries – 7 within 2 years

Regional Activities • Regional activities • Participated in regional meetings on PCP- Botswana March 2011 • Laboratory network activities • Networking with the EA Epidemiology network • Collaborative projects and partners • -EUFMD, FAO, WRL-Pirbright • FMD control programmes in region • lab involvement – Surveillance, Diagnostics, Vaccine matching, vaccine quality assuarance.

Workplan for 2012 • Suggestions for presentation in Bangkok 2012 • Results of Survey on Lab capacity in EA region • Comprehensive Review of FMD Epidemiology in the EA region • Activities of the EA network towards PCP • the project to develop serotype-specific primers for EA FMD has been approved by EuFMD and withinin 12 months should evaluate primer sets for use in EA, (IAH and Lindholm, with local partners in Uganda and Tanzania. Actions: mainly IAH/Lindholm to initiate

  16. Workplan for 2012 (cont) • annual meeting (tentatively) the 5-6th March, in Nairobi (back to back with the FAO/OIE/AU regional PCP/Roadmap Development Workshop). Action: mainly from EuFMD - to confirm dates. • the annual surveillance report for the OIE/FAO Annual Lab network report (on virus circulation in the EA region in 2011  - based on national confirmations and international ref lab findings) should be finalized in early Feb (the deadline is usually set by Pirbright,  and allows for completion of lab results for outbreaks to the end of December). Action: Sabenzia/Chanasa
