  3. Houston is a highly-educated market • Of 8,438 graduates in 2009, 30% earned degrees in business administration • 346,947 (9.5%) received graduate diplomas • Among bachelor, graduate and doctorates: • 14.1% in Professional/Business Services • 14.5% in Government • 10% in Health Care and Social Assistance • Service-providing industries account for 81% of all jobs in the Houston market > Sources: National Center for Education Statistics 2009 Texas Workforce Commission March 2010

  4. 41 of top 100 Houston employers fall into 3 major categories • 14 Healthcare organizations: 45.7% • 23 Oil & Gas/Chemical companies: 41.0% • 4 Service organizations: 13.4% • Note: TWU EMBA enrollment includes a significant number of those in the non-profit/501C sector. Content/examples should address the needs/interests of this sector > Source: Houston Chronicle survey- 2010

  5. But hiring freezes and downsizing present challenges Sector Total Increase Same Downsized No growth Healthcare 14 8 2 5 50% Oil & Gas/Chemical 23 9 4 10 61% Service-related 4 0 2 2 100% Total: 41 17 8 17 61% Short term: Those with graduate degrees will facecompetition from others seeking to enter the job market What’s the future projection for positions requiring a graduate degree? >

  6. Projected job growth between now and 2016? • Healthcare support occupations will grow 43.8% • Management/Financial positions increase 17.6% • Office/Administrative support sector grows 18.2% Long term: Those with graduate degrees will continueto face competition—even as the job market improves What’s the greatest challenge facing TWU EMBA graduates? > Source: Greater Houston Partnership 2010

  7. The challenge… • TWU’s EMBA curriculum runs parallel to otherEMBA Programs offered in the Houston area • All programs focus on Marketing, Management, Finance, and Accounting (same core courses) • All programs attract a large (and growing) percentage of professionals with 3-7 years of practical experience, many seeking the degree to justify/earn a promotion • How can TWU help its graduates better differentiate and position themselves to compete with graduates from higher profile programs from Rice, Tulane, Cornell, and University of Texas? > Sources: University websites

  8. Employers criticize graduates’ communications skills • 67% of salaried employees have writing and presenting responsibilities, which employers state are “deplorable” • Companies spent an average of $950 per employee for writing and presenting workshops. The private sector expended more than $3 billion on re-training in 2004 • As U.T. MBA communications coach, Steve Toms observedthat other high profile graduate programs are not effectively addressing these skills • A 3-part Career Enrichment Series can provide skills that other programs lack • A Career Enrichment Series gives TWU graduates an edge > Source: CollegeBoard 2004 report on behalf of the National Commission on Writing
