  1. Lesson 5 – Useful Microbes Understand that some microbes are useful. Understand how some bacteria protect the human body. Understand that microbes can be used in food production.

  2. Not all that bad!! • We have already studied about how encounters with some microbes have disastrous effects. • Some microbes however, are extremely useful!

  3. Our stomachs contain `friendly` bacteria that help us get the most from our food.

  4. Cows would not be able to digest the grass that they eat if it wasn't for the special microbes found in their stomachs.

  5. Microbes and food production • Microbes help us make many of the foods that we eat.

  6. Baking Bread • Yeast, a fungi, is placed in bread to make it rise. • Yeast feed on the sugar in the bread mix and release carbon dioxide gas which gets trapped inside the sticky dough and causes it to rise.

  7. Yeast can also be used to make beer and wine! • When no oxygen is available for the yeast to use it produces alcohol as a waste product. • This process is called fermentation.

  8. Sweet and sour • Bacteria are used in yogurts. • Bacteria release acid which gives yogurt its characteristic sour taste. • Some contain `friendly` bacteria that also help us digest our food.
