Assessment of Hearing • Deafness is a hearing impairment that is so severe that the child is impaired in processing linguistic information through hearing with or without amplification. • A hearing impairment is any impairment that is not included under the definition of deafness.
Causes of Hearing Impairments • Conductive hearing loss • Problems with structures in the middle or outer ear. • Middle ear infection. • Excessive ear wax.
Causes of Hearing Impairments • Sensorineural hearing loss • Damage to the cochlea or the auditory nerve. • Viral diseases (rubella). • Rh incompatibility. • Ototoxic medications taken by pregnant mothers. • Hereditary factors. • Noise. • Aging.
Causes of Hearing Impairments • Mixed hearing loss • Caused by both conductive and sensorineural problems. • Functional hearing loss • Problems that are not organic. • Psychosomatic causes. • Hysterical conversion. • Malingering. • Emotional or psychological problems.
Causes of Hearing Impairments • Central auditory disorders • Result in no measurable peripheral hearing loss, problems with learning and are often considered learning disabled. • Auditory comprehension problems. • Auditory discrimination problems. • Auditory learning difficulties. • Language development delays.
