1-8: Graphs and Functions. What is a function?. Function: a relationship between an input and an output. WHAT does that mean?? Ok, so lets say Jim has a job. Jim makes 10 dollars an hour. In September Jim worked 100 hours. In October Jim worked 30 hours.

  1. 1-8: Graphs and Functions What is a function?

  2. Function: a relationship between an input and an output. • WHAT does that mean?? • Ok, so lets say Jim has a job.

  3. Jim makes 10 dollars an hour. • In September Jim worked 100 hours. • In October Jim worked 30 hours. • How much did Jim make in September?

  4. Ans. : $1,000

  5. How much did Jim make in October? • He worked 30 hours and makes $10 an hour. • Jim made $300 in October.

  6. THIS is a function. When one variable depends on another we call the relationship between those variables a function.

  7. When we graph functions to see relationships easier. We use a Coordinate System. • A coordinate system used an X and a Y axis.

  9. Coordinates • (x,y) • (4,3) • X:4 • Y:3

  10. Graph points: ( 2,4)

  11. Ordered Pairs I can write a SET of ordered pairs: (0,500) (.2,480) (.4,422)

  12. Write a set of ordered Pairs

  13. (0,10) (1,6) (4,3) • Graph it on your own. • Check each others Graphs

  14. There are two other ways to refer to coordinates • Independent and Dependent Variables • Domains and Range

  15. Independent Variables • The variable in the chart that represents the X.

  16. Dependent Variables • The variable that represents the Y in the chart.

  17. Domain • The first numbers in the ordered pairs (the x) • (1,5) (6,2) (8,4) • Domain: (1,6,8)

  18. Range • The second number in the ordered pairs, the Y. • (1,5) (6,2) (8,4) • Range: (5,2,4)

  19. Name the Domain and Range • (3,2) (7,8) (5,.6) (3,2) • D: • R:
