  1. GSC11(06)_joint_04 ITU-T Status Report on standardization ofNetworked RFID P.A. Probst/Chairman of ITU-T SG16 GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  2. ITU-T Status Report on Standardization of Networked RFID Content • Review of GSC-10 Resolution #9 • Status of the work in the TSAG Correspondence Group on Network Aspects of Identification including RFID • Results of the ITU-T Workshop on NRFID(14-15 February 2006) • Present ITU-T Action plan on NRFID • Proposal for future collaboration

  3. ITU-T Status Report on Standardization of Networked RFID Review of GSC-10 Resolution #9: • Recognizes • the need for global standards, • the extension of RFID applications in a wide range of areas (B2C, B2B), • the importance of networking capabilities to support these (NRFID), • that security and privacy are becoming key issues for a large deployment of RFID. • Resolves • to promote strong and effective collaboration among PSOs in the development of global compatible standards, • to work electronically via the Task Group as specified in GSC-9/7. • Progress report: • ITU-T is not aware of any activity of the Task Group.

  4. ITU-T Status Report on Standardization of Networked RFID Deliverables of the TSAG CG on Network Aspects of Identification including RFID: • Standardization Issues, • Proposed ITU-T strategy for standardization issues, • Business Models and Service, • Terms and Definitions.

  5. ITU-T Status Report on Standardization of Networked RFID Results of the ITU-T Workshop on NRFID (14-15 Feb. 2006) [1/5]: Workshop Objectives • Present the status of RFID technology and identify future trends • Review current and future applications, services and business models leveraging networked RFIDs (NRFIDs) • Identify NRFID aspects relevant to telecommunications (services and network capabilities, architecture, QoS, performance, security, etc.) • Analyse how far existing standards can support NRFID applications and services, and identify where enhanced or new standards might be needed • Identify elements for a roadmap for a standardization framework, including the clarification of the role of applicable SDOs, forums and consortia

  6. ITU-T Status Report on Standardization of Networked RFID Results of the ITU-T Workshop on NRFID (14-15 Feb. 2006) [2/5]: Overview of the sessions • Overview of the status of RFID technology and present efforts by several organizations towards global NRFID standards (ITU-T, ISO/IEC, EPCGlobal, Ubiquitous ID Center, NFC) • Introducing RFID - Visions and Implications • RFID Applications - A Sectoral Approach • RFID and New Business Models • Security Issues in RFID • Networking Architecture and Capabilities of RFIDs • Future trends in NRFID and Ubiquitous Networks

  7. ITU-T Status Report on Standardization of Networked RFID Results of the ITU-T Workshop on NRFID (14-15 Feb. 2006) [3/5]: List of topics of common interests to be considered in the development of global standards 1/2 • Scope: RFID and Sensors Networks • Business models (e.g. service broker architecture issue) • Architecture (network, service stratum) for distributed applications (NGN compliance,..) • MM service/network requirements and capabilities to support present and future applications (B2B, B2C, C2C) • Signalling and control protocols • Ubiquitous information service protocols • Security (confidentiality, privacy, cryptography,…)

  8. ITU-T Status Report on Standardization of Networked RFID Results of the ITU-T Workshop on NRFID (14-15 Feb. 2006) [4/5]: List of topics of common interests to be considered in the development of global standards 2/2 • Interoperability, roaming • Data format • Reader management issue • OID Systems (coherent, scalable, trusted, rapid resolution of identifier, interoperability, …) • Content negotiation issues • Performance and QoS • RF aspects (spectrum allocation, intra and extra RFID compatibility) • Terminology • …

  9. ITU-T Status Report on Standardization of Networked RFID Results of the ITU-T Workshop on NRFID (14-15 Feb. 2006) [5/5]: List of key players to be involved in the coordination and harmonization procedures • ITU:ITU-T, ITU-R, ITU-D • ISO/IEC JTC 1: SC6, SC17, SC27, SC31 • ISO:TC104, TC122, TC204 • ETSI • IEEE • EPCglobal • NFC • Regional Key Players

  10. ITU-T Status Report on Standardization of Networked RFID Present activities on RFID in ITU-T Study Groups: • TSAG Correspondence Group • Identification of standardization topics • Development of a roadmap with the respective responsibilities of ITU-T SGs and other bodies • Proposal of a single point of contact for NRFID matters in ITU-T • 16 Contributions submitted: • SG 11: Signalling and protocols • SG 13: NGN networking capabilities • SG 16: Services and Application aspects • SG 17: Privacy and Security, Directory Services • Overall coordination: • Proposal to TSAG from RFID Correspondence Group

  11. ITU-T Status Report on Standardization of Networked RFID Proposal for on-going work in ITU-T that is being made by TSAG RFID Correspondence Group: • Finalizing report on the set of standardization issues on network aspects of identification (including RFID) • Identification of ITU-T SGs and external bodies related to these issues • Identification of the issues needing urgent attention • Finalizing report on ITU-T strategy • Includes mapping between issues and ITU-T study groups • Finalizing report on business models and service scenarios • Finalizing report on relevant terms and definitions • Proposing a Joint Coordination Activity (JCA) under lead of ITU-T SG16 to coordinate work across ITU-T • Also provides single point-of-contact for external bodies • Proposing a Focus Group to address the urgent issues • Parent SG is SG16

  12. ITU-T Status Report on Standardization of Networked RFID Proposal for future collaboration to GSC-11: • Confirm the importance of the development of global standards for NRFID, • Recognize the leading role of ITU-T as general coordinator for the development of global NRFID standards, • Continue and improve coordination in the framework of the revised resolution GSC-11/9, • …
