  2. Goals of Today's Workshop… • Provide you with a refresher of John Jay’s General Education Requirements • Discuss course selection for the Spring 2010 semester • Review the steps needed to get registered

Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Select Classes….. • What major and degree program (AS/BA/BS) are you listed as in Degree Works? • You can also check your “Continuing Freshman Advisement Worksheet” where it says “Current Major” • What classes are you currently enrolled in? • Please look at your “Continuing Freshman Advisement Worksheet” where it says “Undergrad Course History” • What outside time commitments (work, family responsibilities, sports teams, etc.) will you have during the spring semester? • Based on any outside time commitments you may have, how many credits can you manage during the spring semester? • part-time status (1 – 11 credit hours) • full-time status (12+ credit hours)

General Education Requirements for an Associate Degree (60 Credits min) • Skills English 101 and 201 Speech 113 Math 104 • Core Requirements History 203 (Prehistory to 500 CE) or 204 (500 – 1650) Literature 230/231 or 232/233 • Distribution Requirements A. Select two of the following four courses Ethnic Studies 123, 124 or 125 Fine Art Foreign Language Philosophy 231 B. Social Science (select 2) Anthropology 101 Economics 101 Government 101 Psychology 101 Sociology 101 • Natural Science 107 • Physical Education (1 – 3 credits) Students are expected to complete the Skills Courses within the first 30 college credits and must pass the three CUNY Assessment Tests before completing 61 credits.

General Education Requirements for a Baccalaureate Degree (120 Credits min) • Skills English 101 and 201 Speech 113 Math 104 or 105 Math 108 or 141 • Core Requirements History (Prehistory to 500 CE) or 204 (500 – 1650) or 205 (1650 – Present) (choose two in chronological order) Philosophy 231 Literature 230 or 231 and 232 or 233 • Distribution Requirements Foreign Language (two semesters of the same language) Ethnic Studies 123, 124 or 125 Fine Arts • Social Sciences (select 2) Anthropology 101 Economics 101 Government 101 Psychology 101 Sociology 101 • Natural Science 107 (except for FOS majors) • Secondary Science ENV108, FOS108 or PHY108 (except for FOS & FIS majors) • Physical Education (1 – 3 credits) Students are expected to complete the Skills Courses within the first 30 college credits and must pass the three CUNY Assessment Tests before completing 61 credits.

Exemptions • In order to be exempt from Foreign Language, Natural Science 107 and/or Physical Ed, students must meet the following criteria: • Foreign Language • Completed 3 years of a language at the high school level • Received passing grade of 75 or higher on the New York State Level III Language Regents Examination • Languages offered at the College: •Arabic •Italian •Russian •Chinese •Japanese •Spanish •French •Portuguese • Students must take a placement exam in the Foreign Language Lab (room 112 Westport) before registering for Spanish, French & Russian/ No appointment necessary • Natural Science 107 (NSC107)* • Completed 3 years of science in high school • Received passing grade of 75 or higher on any 2 New York Science Regents Examination. *Bachelor Degree students are still required to take a laboratory-based science course (ENV 108, FOS 108 or PHY 108, except for FOS & FIS majors) • Physical Ed • Participated on a John Jay sports team for a full season, or received physical ed credit for: military training, police, fire, corrections academy, or other comparable agency training

  11. Additional Course Selection • You may select a 101 course in your major. These courses include: • Criminal Justice 101 • Corrections 101 • Fire Science 101 • International Criminal Justice 101 • Police Science 101* • Security 101* * Must be eligible to enroll in ENG 101 • English 101 is a prerequisite for all courses at the 200-level • Check course description for any additional prerequisites

  12. Lets Get Started by… Logging on to the CUNY Portal!!

  13. How do I log in to CUNY Portal? Go to www.cuny.edu to login Click her to login to your CUNY Portal account or to register for an account.

  14. Log in to CUNY Portal (Step 2) Click here to go to the CUNY Portal login screen.

  15. What is on CUNY Portal? Click here to log in to Blackboard Make sure your Primary College is set as John Jay College in order to be able to view eSIMS. Click here to log in to eSIMS Click here to login to DegreeWorks

  16. What is Degree Works? • A web-based tool designed to aid you and advisors with tracking your progress toward graduation. • Allows you to view your grades, credits, and courses needed for graduation. • DegreeWorks does not take the place of formal academic advisement. • It is not the same as your official transcript.

  17. The Degree Works main page shows your Name, Degree, Major, Level/Year and the date of your last audit at the top of the screen, as well as the audit’s functions. READ THE DISCLAMER!!! Then click “View Audit.”

  18. The Audit provides detailed information on the 4 components required for completion of the degree (Skills Assessment Requirements, General Education Requirements, Major Requirements, and if applicable, Electives).

  19. The 4 components are listed in blue. Courses still required will be identified as “Still Needed”. Checked boxes mean the section is completed. Courses needed to fulfill that area are listed on the right.

  20. Additional Audit Features • ‘What-If’ - See the effect of a potential program change for the student. • ‘Planner’ – List possible courses for future semesters. • ‘Look Ahead’ – See how recommended courses affect degree progress.

  21. So How Many Credits Should You Take? Credits Full Time status is often required in order to be eligible for Health Insurance coverage and certain forms of Financial Aid (i.e. TAP). It is important that you speak with a Financial Aid counselor and Academic Advisor when registering for and withdrawing from classes. In order to graduate with a bachelors degree in four years it is recommended that students register for 15 credits (typically 5 courses) required for their degree every semester. However, it is important that before registering, students assess whether taking on a full time credit load is feasible.

  22. Financial Aid and You • Please go to ONE STOP if you have any financial aid questions • If you are receiving TAP (Tuition Assistance Program) it is important to keep in mind that theywill only pay for classes under the degree program listed for you in E-SIMS

  23. Steps to Get Registered! You will be able to register starting October 26, 2009 • *Log on to your CUNY Portal by going to www.cuny.edu • Once logged in, click on “ESIMS” under “SSO Applications for Students” • Read main page of ESIMS to see if there are any stops on your account and to see when your tuition payment is due • Get any stops cleared by visiting the department that administered the stop(s) • Clicking on the stop(s) will indicate the department that put it on your record • All students who have under 30 credits will have an EF Stop on their account which prevents students from registering online without first meeting with an Academic Advisor or Freshman Peer Advisor. This stop is temporarily cleared during registration. • In the left column, click on “Open Sections” to view available course offerings • Select semester – Spring 2010 • Just have Undergraduate selected & uncheck Graduate • Click “No” where it says “List Disciplines Under Department” then click “Search” • Next to where it says “Discipline” select the subject you want to look up and pick the specific course you wish to take • Click “Only Open Sections” and then click “Search” • Map out a schedule based on the courses you were advised to take and copy down the corresponding 4-digit Course Registration Codes • Remember: You must register to take classes at least 3 days a week / No 2 day schedule • Return to ESIMS main screen, click “Registration” and select Spring 2010 • Type in the 4-digit Course Registration Codes you wrote down previously and press “Submit” • Return to ESIMS main screen and click “Schedule/Grades” to view the courses you registered for, the times, days & locations Trouble Logging on to CUNY Portal? * If you do not have a CUNY Portal login, click “Register Now” to sign up for an account If you remember your Username, but forgot your Password, click on “Forgot Your Password” to retrieve your login info If you do not remember your Username or Password, you will need to contact the DoIT Helpdesk at 212-237-8200 or go by ONE STOP to retrieve your Username If you have any additional problems logging on to the CUNY Portal please contact the DoIT Helpdesk at 212-237-8200

  24. Last Minute Reminders • Check ESIMS to see if you have any stops on your account that need to be cleared in order for you to register. • Today, you are choosing courses based on the assumption that you will be passing all of your classes this semester. • If you do not pass any of these courses (F, R or WU), you must repeat those courses that you failed by making a program adjustment as soon as you receive your grades!!! • Students cannot have all 4 or 5 classes on the same two days – You need to come to the college 3 or more days a week • Students who need to retake developmental courses (COM 102, ENGW100, MATH 100 & 103 & 191 courses) should contact FYE regarding their January 2010 Extension program: Andrea Rodriguez Anderson Rosa 016 Westport 212-237-8172 OR 019 Westport 212-484-1344 arodriguez@jjay.cuny.edu arosa@jjay.cuny.edu
