With a population of 7.2 M. inhabitants and a surface of 32,106 km2, Catalonia shows the following variables: • The Catalan GDP is higher than the GDP of countries such as Ireland, Finland or Greece. • The Catalan per capita GDP is similar to the one of Italy and higher than the EU-25 average GDP. • Catalan exports are at the level of those of Finland and are higher than the Portuguese and Greek exports. • Catalan Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is very close to the FDI level of Austria and higher than the FDI of countries such as Estonia and Finland. 6. Catalonia: An excellent location for foreign companies At present, more than 3,000 foreign companies are located in Catalonia • In Catalonia, we find the … • 70.5%of the Japanese companies • 61.7% of the French companies • 60.8% of the German companies • 60.1% of the American companies • 46.7% of the British companies • … located in Spain Source: ACC1Ó and Foreign Chambers of Commerce. 7. The Agro Food sector in Catalonia • The food and drink industry appears to be the third most important industry in Catalonia, accounting for 15% of the total of the GDP and it is nearly the 23% of all food and drink production of Spain. • The production of machinery for agriculture, machinery for food industry and packaging machinery accounts for more than 5% of the total industrial production in Catalonia and represents about 30% of the Spanish total in this sectors. • The main strength in the agro food sector in Catalonia is in the machinery for food industry. Most of the companies that form part of this local industrial production system are specialized in machinery for making bread and pastries, machinery for the meat, those for the coffee and chocolateindustries, as well as the packaging machinery. • Machinery for meat industry. Catalonia is home to 80% of the Spanish companies that produce machinery for meat industry. • Machinery for making bread and pastries. Over half of Spain’s manufacturers of bread and pastry-making machinery are located in Catalonia. So are the manufactures for the chocolate and coffee industries. • Packaging machinery. It is very important in Catalonia the production of machinery for packaging products of all types (food included: fruits, liquids, dairies, etc). In most cases, companies started to specialize in packaging machinery in the 1960s and 1970s. Many others were formed as spin-offs as workers left companies in the industry to start their own business. In recent years, foreign companies have invested in the local production systems and have bought out some of the main companies. • Other elements related to the production of packaging machinery are engineering firms (which are important due to the complexity of the machinery and the continuous need for innovation) and companies that design packaging and barcodes. This makes for a complex network of subcontracting and cooperation relationships between companies • More than 40% of the companies that produce packaging machinery in Spain are located in Catalonia.

  8. Catalonia Business Prospects in Brasil • ACC1Ó, the Catalonian Agency for Competitiveness, previously COPCA, has a Business Promotion Centre in Sao Paulo since 1999, which is now a Business Platform, to help Catalonian companies to do business in Brazil: either trading or investing in this Country. Nowadays 6 Catalan companies are based in the Business Platform, which is located at Vila Olímpia District, within the financial city and business centre of Sao Paulo. • Since 1999 COPCA Brazil has worked with an average of 200 companies in order to help them to start doing business in the Brazilian market and has promoted 50 commercial missions either from Catalan companies coming to Brazil as from Brazilian companies travelling to Catalonia to do business. • The Brazilian market is yearly gaining relevance for Catalonian exporting companies. Our exports to Brazil have increased year by year, with an special relevance in 2007 when the exports showed an increase of 7,7%. However, in the alimentary sector, there is a strong unbalance: Brazilian exports to Catalonia account for more than 15 times of their imports. • The sectors in which ACC1Ó Sao Paulo has more experience by working side by side with the Catalan companies are: • City and architectural projects • Services (tourism, health, engineering) • Chemical, pharmacy and cosmetics • Industrial machinery • Automotive components and engineering
