ShlachLecha (Send to You) A Scouting Mission
The Mission • God told Moses to send 12 scouts. • Why 12? • They were tasked to checkout the land of Canaan
The Journey • Caleb and Joshua were 2 of the scouts sent. • They checked out the land for 40 days.
The Return • They returned and reported to Moses, Aaron, and the Jewish people. • The land flowed with milk and honey
The Report • The people were powerful. • Giants lived in the land • The people became worried
Caleb and Joshua Speak • They urged the people to go up and take the land. • The 10 other scouts spread a bad report. • The Jewish people became scared.
The Jewish People’s Response • The whole community broke into crying • They spoke bad things against Moses and Aaron • They shouted: “If only we might die in this wilderness!”
Moses and Aaron • Moses and Aaron fell on their faces and prayed to God • The community threatened to stone Moses • Moses asked God to forgive them saying that God was “slow to anger and abounding in kindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression.”
The LORD Speaks • God pardoned • None of the men who had seen God’s signs would see the Promised Land • 20 years old and up would die in the wilderness.
The Result • Only Caleb and Joshua would be able to see the land • Israel wandered in the wilderness for 40 years
A Very Sad Day • Occurred on the 9th of Av • Also known as on Tishah B'Av • The destruction of the First Temple (Babylonians, 586 B.C.) • The destruction of the Second Temple (Romans, 70 A.D.)
