  4. How would you respond? Sent by Isabella on Sunday, October 24, 2004 at 11:39:38 AM Greetings, Mr. Lee. I am Queen Isabella of Castille, what many now consider to be Spain. I understand that you have led a very remarkable life. I was impressed by your profile. I have respect for many of the things you stood for, such as your dislike for slavery. I am also in favor of not dividing a land. I believe in a united people. I am curious however, how you feel about the headscarf issue. I am here for you any time you need me. You can correspond directly to me by going to the guest list, reading my profile, adding me to your colleagues list, going to the mailbox, then finally composing to me a mail message. I look forward to hearing from you soon. My regards, -Queen Isabella http://poot.soe.umich.edu

  10. The Law • On March 15, 2004 the bill banning religious symbols being worn in schools was signed into law by President Chirac after passing through France’s national legislator. An English translation of the law is:"In public elementary schools, junior high schools and high schools, students are prohibited from wearing signs or attire through which they exhibit conspicuously a religious affiliation. Note that the internal regulations [of the schools] require disciplinary procedures to be preceded by a dialogue with the student."

  11. Hearing Description • The defendant, Mlle. Laila Mokeddem of Paris, represented by Mssr. Abdelhamid Mokeddem of Paris, asserts that the law forbidding the wearing of the Muslim hijab (headscarf) in public school violates her freedom to practice religion. The defense asks the court to recommend that the law be struck down.

  12. Background Information • Video produced by PBS.
