The Printing Press • For thousands of years writings were copied by hand • Block Printing • Invented in China, introduced in Europe (1300s) • Cut every word into wooden block, covered with ink, pressed to paper • Took long time, 1 block only did 1 page • Johann Gutenberg developed printing press with movable type

  6. The Printing Press • Individual letters of metal held together by a frame • Type could be reset for new pages • Allowed for mass production of books • Encouraged spread of new ideas • People learned to read

  7. The Guild System • Similar to unions of today • Merchant Guild – Group of merchants that lived in a certain area. • Helped members & their families • Craft Guild – Group of merchants that all practiced the same craft (i.e. Shoemakers)
