  2. Viruses (A quick review) • are not alive • some can be prevented with vaccines • cannot be cured, has to run its course. • needs a host cell in order to reproduce • EXAMPLES • Polio • Smallpox • Influenza • chicken pox

  3. Bacteria (a quick review) • Reproduce rapidly • Can be treated with antibiotics • Antimicrobial products prevent bacteria from growing • Are everywhere • Antibiotic resistance - bacteria have become harder to kill • Diseases caused by bacteria • Lyme Disease • E. Coli • Salmonella • MRSA

  4. New Material Protists Fungi Parasites

  5. Protists Types: animal-like, plant-like, fungus-like Move by: cilia (hairs), flagella (whip-like appendage), psuedopods (false feet) Examples: algae, kelp amoeba, paramecium, euglena, dinoflagellates, diatoms, etc. Generally not harmful but some can carry disease or poison

  6. Pictures of Protists (3 slides)

  7. Fungi • Unicellular and multicellular • Eukaryotic • Live where it’s warm and moist (land and water) • Can’t move • Heterotrophs: eat dead things or are parasites • Reproduction: Spores (sexual and asexual), Budding (yeast) • Info.: Use hyphae to get food (except yeast), have cell wall and more than one nucleus

  8. Fungi Diseases caused by fungus: • Athlete’s foot • Thrust • Ringworm Can be treated with anti-fungal medication.

  12. Parasites A Parasite is an organism that lives on or in an organism of another species, known as the host, from the body of which it obtains nutriment. • Parasites must have a host organism in order to survive • They feed off the host organism, weakening / sometimes killing host • Prevention • fully cook meats • avoid walking around barefoot outside • wear insect repellent
