  2. Explanation • Miplato was designed by Our First Lady, Michele Obama to help people make healthier choices. • It encourages they eat fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, and dairy foods. • As the rate of obesity is on the rise, this tool can help people to make healthier food choices for themselves.

  3. Mi Plato • My Plate illustrates the five food groups that are the building blocks for a healthy diet using a familiar image – a place setting for a meal. Before you eat, think about what goes on your plate or in your cup or bowl.

  4. Las Frutas • What foods are in the Fruit Group?Any fruit or 100% fruit juice counts as part of the Fruit Group. Fruits may be fresh, canned, frozen, or dried, and may be wholeor cut-up.How much fruit is needed daily? The amount of fruit you need to eat depends on age, sex, and level of physical activity. • Recommended daily amount is 1-2 cups.

  5. Las Verduras • What foods are in the Vegetable Group? • Any vegetable or 100% vegetable juice counts as a member of the Vegetable Group. Vegetables may be raw or cooked; fresh, frozen, canned, or dried/dehydrated; and may be whole, cut-up, or mashed. • Recommended daily amount is 1 ½ to 2 cups • (2 cups of leafy greens is considered one cup of vegetables)

  6. Los panes y cereales • What foods are in the Grains Group? Any food made from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, barley or another cereal grain is a grain product. Bread, pasta, oatmeal, breakfast cereals, tortillas, and grits are examples of grain products. Recommended daily amount is 5 ounces.

  7. La carne • What foods are in the Protein Foods Group? • All foods made from meat, poultry, seafood, beans and peas, eggs, processed soy products, nuts, and seeds are considered part of the Protein Foods Group. Although beans are a good source of protein they are considered part of the vegetable group. • Recommened daily amount is 4 ounces

  8. Los productoslatecos • What foods are included in the Dairy Group? • All fluid milk products and many foods made from milk are considered part of this food group. Most Dairy Group choices should be fat-free or low-fat. Foods made from milk that retain their calcium content are part of the group. Foods made from milk that have little to no calcium, such as cream cheese, cream, and butter, are not. • Recommended daily amount is 2 cups.

  9. Projecto • With a partner you are going to use the Miplato rules to create your own meal plan for one day including a breakfast, lunch and dinner. • First you need to look through your food papers and come up with the meals plan to make sure they follow the Miplatoguidlelines. • Next, cut out pictures of each food. Design your plate to look nice and label each plate in espanol. • When you have finished each plate we will arrange them neatly to a poster.
