  2. Santa annacloses in • After the Battle of the Alamo, Santa Anna pursued Sam Houston to East Texas. • Santa Anna considered himself the “Napoleon of the West”

  3. Runaway scrape • Texan families fled East towards Louisiana to escape from Santa Anna. This became known as the Runaway Scrape.

  4. Battle of san jacinto • On April 20, 1836, a brief fight developed between the Mexican army & Texan cavalry. • Cavalry: Soldiers on horseback

  5. Texans outnumbered • Sam Houston’s troops in San Jacinto numbered 800 while Santa Anna had 1,300 soldiers.

  6. Deaf smith • Sam Houston ordered Deaf Smith to burn Vince’s Bridge to prevent the Mexican army from retreating.

  7. Juan seguin • Juan Seguin served with William B. Travis at the Alamo, but survived because he was sent out as a messenger to Sam Houston. • He & his Tejano soldiers fought bravely in the Battle of San Jacinto.

  8. Remember the Alamo As the Mexican army rested, the Texans launched a surprise attack on April 21, 1836, as they shouted, “Remember the Alamo! Remember Goliad!”

  9. Texans Win The battle lasted only 18 minutes. The Texans won & suffered only 9 deaths & 30 wounded. 630 Mexicans were killed & 730 were captured.

  10. Santa Anna escaped during the battle, disguised himself & hid in a barn. He was captured the next day & brought to Sam Houston, who was shot in the leg during the battle. Santa Anna Escapes
