  2. Beneficial to the ecosystem • Bats consume large amounts of insects nightly, many of which are harmful to certain plants.

  3. Nocturnal animals • Mainly active at dusk or dark. • Most people will never see a bat or know they live nearby. • However some people may occasionally find a bat lying on the ground or inside a building.

  4. Five high risk animals for rabies • Coyotes • Bats • Raccoons • Skunks • Foxes This year in our seven county region we had 26 bats test positive for rabies out of the 27 rabies cases reported for the year.

  5. What to do if encountered with a bat • Don’t try to handle it. • Clear the area and secure the room. • Advise someone immediately and stay clear till someone arrives to remove the bat. Also find out if any one came in contact with the bat.

  6. Who do I contact • Contact Animal Control (361) 387-5701 or (361) 767-3781 Also let Building Maintenance for the Courthouse know of the situation.

  7. Summary • If you find a bat do not try to handle it • Contact Animal Control immediately • Clear the area and do not return till the bat is removed. • Give any information to the Animal Control Officer if any human contact was made with the bat.
