Mercantilism • It’s all about the Benjamins. • Country’s ultimate goal is to make money from their colonies • Colonies find anyway they can to make money: • New England- fishing, shipbuilding, lumber, livestock • Middle- food, trade/merchants, shipbuilding • Southern- cash crops • Navigation Acts- colonies can’t sell stuff to other countries without going through England first (England • has to make money from it!)

  3. Crackdown on Massachusetts Massachusetts colony wasn’t following the rules and continued to smuggle goods to and from other countries….. England gets mad and King Charles revokes their charter- makes Massachusetts a royal colony under the Kings rule. SO….. • Massachusetts is no longer a “Puritan” colony • Non-Puritans get a say in the gov’t (Half-way Covenant)

  4. Act it out! • Imagine that you are • 1. King Charles • 2. A merchant in Massachusetts who works WITH the King • 3. A smuggler in Massachusetts • 4. A Puritan • Create an improv conversation that might have occurred between these four people.

  9. Middle Passage • The voyage that brought kidnapped slaves from Africa to the West Indies and later the 13 colonies • Horrible conditions, beatings, filth, overcrowding, starvation, suicide- 20% did not survive • Between 1492-1863 25-30,000,000 Africans taken
