  2. 3 TEAMS • INVENTORY REPORTING • Portland - Sally Campbell team leader • CA/OR/WA ANALYSIS & RESEARCH • Portland - Jeremy Fried team leader • AK ANALYSIS & RESEARCH • Anchorage – Tara Barrett team leader

REPORTING TEAM • Serves both Anchorage and Portland • Non-research positions • Reports for periodic & annual inventory • Biometrics problem-solving • Data QA • Client interface – annual meeting, client database, newsletters, PNW-FIA website, data review • Some collaborative projects with research teams • Pacific Islands reporting and research • Lichen research & model development

  4. RESEARCH TEAMS • WA, OR, CA Team (Jeremy Fried) • AK Team (Tara Barrett) • Perm. FTEs are paneled research positions • Hypothesis-based, issue-driven research • Most researchers have had experience compiling a periodic inventory • QA role • Some collaborative projects with Reporting team

  5. 5-YEAR REPORTS • OR and CA reports due 2007 • Collaborative effort between Reporting team and CA/OR/WA Research team • Two analysts as leads for each report • Almost all analysts on both teams involved at some level • Similar format and content in both reports • Impetus for data QA, esp. regional add-ons & P3

  6. 5-YEAR REPORTS • Started with issue ID meetings for each state • Focus is on issues that FIA data addresses • GRM challenges due to lack of annual remeasurement data • Level of issue analysis variable • Will serve as ticklers for more info & research elsewhere • Linkage with OR Dept of Forestry indicators of sustainable forest management in OR report

  8. 5-YEAR REPORT ISSUES • Disturbance and Stressors • Land use and land cover change • Insects and diseases • Invasive plants • Air quality – lichens and ozone • Fire, fuels, and risk • Biomass utilization/fuels reduction

  9. 5-YEAR REPORT ISSUES • Basic Resource Info • Area • Ownership • Protected lands • Products • Timber Products Output • Volume • Growth, Removals, Mortality • Nontimber forest products

  10. FUTURE • What’s next at PNW? • WA & AK 5-Year reports; Pac. Is periodic reports • Ongoing research and publishing • Topical analysis/reporting (lichens, ozone, dwm, etc) • Analysis/reporting for specific ownerships (NFS, BLM, NPS)?

FUTURE • Future of 5-Year Reports - nationally • Will discuss at AB meeting next month • Are they valuable to our clients? • Appropriate format, level of analysis, amount of information • Evaluate time & effort and resulting value • Efficiencies • Balance between research and reporting in FIA units
