  2. What isHip Hop? Definition- an urban youth culture associated with rap music and the fashions of African-American residents of the inner city.

  3. 4 original elements • DJingIn -the earlier days of hip hop the DJs were the stars. They developed what was known as turntablism, which extended the boundaries and techniques of original DJing. As I said before DJ KoolHerc is credited for creating hip hop and although it was all about the DJs at first, their limelight was taken by MCs. Despite this, DJs such as Grandmaster Flash, Mr. Magic and others, were stiil able to reach stardom. • Mcing--Rapping which is also known as emceeing, is basically spoken or chanted rhyming lyrics. The different components include content, flow, and delivery. Rapping is different from word poetry because it is performed in time to the beat of the music. This would be how one flows with the beat. MCing is the main component of hip hop today and the MCs are the stars. • Graffiti-Graffiti has been around before hip hop started but it still was influenced greatly by it. Graffiti and hip hop are tied due to the fact that graffiti artists were involved with other aspects of hip hop as well as it being practiced in areas where hip hop was developing. It is seen as a visual expression of rap music. • Breaking-Just how graffiti is the visual expression of rap music, breaking is the physical expression. It’s a style of dance which developed within the hip hop culture. Break dancing began in the South Bronx along with other elements of hip hop. This form of dance became highly popular and is normally performed with hip hop beats.

  4. What is hip-hop to you? “Hip hop is a way of life. It influences how you dress, and the way we speak. Hip hop is not just music, it’s a connection and a reminder of what we go through and what we have to do to move forward.” – AneudyAlcantara “Hip hop is a powerful form of expression that seeks to illustrate the lifestyles and struggles of the artists. These struggles are shared primarily by urban city youths like many of us which allows us to appropriately relate to what we experience in our daily lives. It represents struggle, success, love etc. Hip hop tells tales of everyday life. It is not a lifestyle, it is life.” Luis Payano

  5. How did hip-hop begin?

  6. The genre came up in the 70’s, it all started with a Jamaican DJ from the Bronx, by the name of KoolHerc.  Herc's style of dee-jaying was basically reciting rhymes over instrumentals that he would do this at house parties. Herc would rap with the microphone, using a myriad of in-house references. Later than, Herc’s style started spreading around the other boroughs of New York (Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, etc.)

  7. ` A golden group of the old school Era was The Sugar Hill Gang. The Sugar Hill Gang became well known with one of their hits, “Rapper’s Delight.” Some rappers believe this was an initiation point. After that was when hip-hop started to be heard more.
