  2. The KPACE Program • KPACE -- Kirkwood Pathways for Academic Career Education and Employment • KPACE Partners -- Kirkwood Community College, United Way of East Central Iowa, Employers, and Community Based Organizations

  3. Mission To promote upward mobility and economic self-sufficiency through education, employment, and mentorship in fields of growth and development in the 21st century.

  5. Who We Are Looking For! Targeted Population: • Single female headed households • Single male headed households • Needs GED • Needs to increase Math and Reading levels • Unemployed/dislocated workers • Ex-offenders • Those who have reliable childcare • Those who need career focused training • Has stable housing • At 250% or below of the national poverty level • Posses a sincere interest in building a future career in Healthcare, Manufacturing, or Business Computing.

Goal of the KPACE Program The purpose of KPACE is to help individuals who are interested in three fields of study (Healthcare, Manufacturing, and Computers) and help them increase remedial levels in the areas of Math, Reading, and Writing in order for a individual to: • Acquire Skills and Competencies • Obtain GED • Increase Literacy • Earn Credential • Associates Degree • Obtain Employment • In Industry Sector • Attain Benefits (vacation, health care, sick leave, tuition reimbursement, retirement) • Retain Employment • Wage Progression

The “KPACE” Program Fall 2011 Cohort (25 students) Performance Measures • 84% (21 students) retained in their academic plan • 64% (16 students) earned a credential (GED, Certificate, or Industry Credential) Other Measures of Success • Obtained employment • Benefits attainment (vacation, health care, sick leave, retirement, etc. • Employment retention • Wage progression Spring 2012 Cohort Program Interest • 90 individuals expressed interest • 70 individuals attended KPACE Orientation • 20 students selected for Spring session (10 Advanced Manufacturing students and 10 Health Care students)

  9. The “KPACE” Program Student Testimonial-Kim is this format ok? Past • Single mom of two elementary students • Worked second shift earning $14.85 an hour • Work entailed periodic lay offs with Whirlpool Amana- individual was laid off in July 2011 KPACE • Individual started Welding training through KPACE in the fall of 2011 • Student obtained a Welding Certificate Present • Student secured employment at Evergreen Packaging Inc. in March • Working first shift which works better for her family’s schedule • Earning $17 an hour. This wage aligns with industry average for the level of training the student has acquired. Future • Student plans to advance her training (diploma, associates degree) after she obtains some work experience

Navigation Through Kirkwood The Role of the Pathway Navigator • Scheduling the KPACE co-hort sections and manage the outreach, recruitment, selection and enrollment • Assisting with the development of student’s pathway plan • Guiding the student through their pathway plan, assisting with the student’s academic progress • Determining support services necessary for the student’s success (stipends, transportation, childcare, books, equipment) • Connecting students to community resources when necessary
