Overview With sponsorship from BELCO, in cooperation with the Bermuda Department of Energy, the Bermuda Host Committee, is conducting a Sustainable Energy Challenge for Senior School students leading up to Global Entrepreneurship Week, being held November 16 to 22. The Challenge: Senior Students are invited to submit ideas for a new, viable method for harnessing and/or using sustainable energy. Submissions should be 'electronic storyboards', either a PowerPoint Presentation or via a video presentation (see rules for required components). The student or team (3 members or less) with the top solutions, as decided by a panel of industry experts, will be awarded prizes valued at over $2,000, and celebrated during GEW '09. The Schedule: Contest Launch: October 7 Workshop at The Berkeley Institute: October 24, 1-4pm SUBMISSION DEADLINE: November 6 Submissions can be emailed to: e-commerce@gov.bm. OR: CDs can be dropped off to The Ministry of Energy, Telecommunications and Ecommerce in the FB Perry on Church Street. Preliminary Selection of Super 7: November 7 The GEW Host Committee will choose the ‘Super Seven Solutions’, the 7 best ideas. Final Judging & Prize Presentation: November 17 The 'Super 7' teams will present their solutions to a distinguished panel of energy industry experts, who will determine the top solutions and award prizes.

Rules Rules The idea submitted should be for an innovative viable method of harnessing and/or using sustainable energy. Students must be enrolled in a local senior school. (Home schools are invited to participate.) Entries can be submitted by individuals or by teams of no more than 3 students. All ‘Super 7’ entries will be recognised at the Award ceremony. There will be only 1 team prize. The top 3 individuals will receive prizes (see Prizes for more information). Required Content: Product/Service Name Product/Service Description (i.e., solar, wind, tide, etc.) Explanation of how the product will work and/or the scientific method/research needed to make it work. You solution must be an implementable. Cost estimate of Product or Service (if available). Competitive Advantage of your solution verses other power supplies. Estimate of savings of your solution verses other power supplies. Optional Content: Consider creating marketing materials for your product/service.
Prizes Team Grand Prize: Each team member will receive 1 iPod Touch Individuals Grand Prize: $1,000 educational grant 2nd Place: iPod Touch 3rd Place: Cell Phone Winner’s school - Individual or Team category will receive $500 gift certificate from Gateway Systems All Super 7 Students will receive eco gift bags.

The Solution • Fully explain your business idea. • Be sure to answer the following questions • Is your business a product or service? • What form of sustainable energy does it use? (i.e., solar, wind, tide, etc.) • Who do you think would buy this product – Individual consumers? Businesses? Governments?
The Science Explanation/diagram of how the product will work and/or the scientific method/research needed to make it work. Your solution must be viable.
The Cost • Cost estimate of Product or Service (if available). If possible, also provide a selling price. • Suggestion: • For product - prepare cost based on each individual unit (research cost of raw materials) • For service – consider the average number of hours it will take to perform the service, and determine a per hour wage/fee to determine total cost. (If materials are needed, include cost.)
The Competition • Who are your competitors (consider those who offer similar products/services that are not eco-friendly)? • What customer needs and preferences are you competing to meet? • What are the similarities and differences between their products/services and yours? • What are the strengths and weaknesses of their products/services? • How do their prices compare to yours? • How do you plan to compete? • Offer better quality services? • More support? • Easier access to services? • Focus on the eco-friendliness of your product? • Lower prices (see next slide)?
The Savings Will your sustainable energy solution cost the user less in the long run? Provide an estimate of the savings.
The ‘Sell’ This is your final chance to ‘sell’ the judges on your idea. What are the benefits to the user and the environment? Why is your product/service a TOP solution?
