  2. Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans

  3. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in WW1.

  4. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Armistice Day on November 11, 1919.

  5. Armistice Day became Veterans Day, in 1938.

  6. Official ceremonies for Veterans Day center around the Tomb of the Unknowns.

  7. 2.6 million veterans served during World War II (1941-1945). 2.8 million veterans served during the Korean War (1950-1953).

  9. 7.8 million veterans served during the Vietnam War era (1964-1975) 5.2 million veterans served during the Gulf War(1990 –1991).

  10. Approximately 6 million veterans served in peacetime.

  11. 9.2 million veterans are over 65. 1.8 million veterans are women. 1.9 million veterans are under 35

  12. There are approximately 23.2 million military veterans in the United States.

  13. 5 states have more than 1 million veterans in among their population: California, Florida, Texas, New York and Pennsylvania

  14. An Army honor guard, the 3d U.S. Infantry keeps day and night vigil at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery.

  15. At exactly 11 a.m. on Nov 11, a color guard, of members from each of the military branches, renders honors at the Tomb of the Unknowns.

  16. The nation's tribute is symbolized by the laying of a presidential wreath

  17. The nation's tribute to its war dead is symbolized by the playing of “Taps”
