  2. Revising vs. Editing REVISING • Happens to your essay as a whole. • Intentionally looking to improve. • Revisit and rethink your topic. • Focus on big ideas, organization, and credibility. EDITING • Happens within your essay. • Close examination. • Re-reading with the intent to find and fix errors. • Sentence structure • Grammar • Punctuation • Spelling

  3. Revision Takes Time There are many things to consider. • Is the essay well organized? • Is research used effectively? • Are sources credited correctly? • Is the sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, or spelling correct? Start early. • Visit the Writing Center for help.

  4. Read your Paper Aloud • Read your paper aloud. • Read it to yourself. • Read it with pen in hand. • Read it to another person, your pet, a nearby plant, or a stuffed animal.

  5. Organization Reverse Outline Analyze the organization of your essay • Title • Thesis and conclusion • Main ideas of each paragraph

  6. Research and Sources Using research effectively in your essay lends credibility to your thesis and supporting ideas. Think of incorporating quotes as a sandwich. • Make a point or a statement. • Support the statement with a quote. • Add detail by explaining, interpreting, or giving examples.

  7. Editing Read your essay aloud listening for clues. • Hesitation: Is the wording awkward? • Breathing: Is the sentence too long? • Rhythm: Does every sentence sound the same? Pay attention to your pattern of errors. • Handbook open. • Pen in hand. • Learn to identify them. • Know how to fix them.

  8. Read your Paper Aloud • One more time. • With feeling. • Own the words on the page. • You’ve worked hard to create your best essay. • Be proud of what you have written.
