  19. Grizzlies Challenge! • You will SILENTLY complete 3 box and whisker plots using data from the Memphis Grizzlies roster. • This assignments will be graded for correctnessAND justifications/work shown.

  20. Grizzlies Challenge! • You and a partner will complete 3 box and whisker plots using data from the Memphis Grizzlies roster. • Group Procedures: • Talk only to your partner. • Talk only about the current assignment. • Talk using 12 inch voices. • This assignments will be graded for correctnessAND justifications/work shown.

  21. Work It • Some guiding steps if you need help getting started: What is the… Lower extreme (start of first whisker) Lower quartile (start of box) Median (line in box) Upper quartile(end of box) Upper extreme (end of second whisker)

  22. Grizzlies Challenge! • You and a partner will complete 3 box and whisker plots using data from the Memphis Grizzlies roster. • Group Procedures: • Talk only to your partner. • Talk only about the current assignment. • Talk using 12 inch voices. • These assignments will be graded for correctnessAND justifications/work shown. • Finish early? • Start your homework!

  24. Tuesday, 3-25-14 Bellwork 195, 186, 201, 205, 183, 201, 209, 195, 201, 198 3 6 9 12 15 18 21

  25. Announcements! • Homework is due on FRIDAY!! (Activity on pg. 58, Problems 1-8 on pg. 534, and Problems 1-14 on page 568) • Short quiz on data representation on THURSDAY (box plots, frequency tables, scatter plots) • Tutoring Thursday night until 4:15pm (make-up work) • 37 school days until the math MCT2

  26. Random factoid A gorilla sleeps about 70% of its 23 year lifespan.

  27. Grizzlies challengeDiscussion • Compare the box and whisker plots from Questions 3 and 4. How has the plot changed? • Did the minimum or the maximum change? Why or why not? Be sure to relate your reasons to the data you used to construct your plot. • Did the median change? Why or why not? Be sure to relate your reasons to the data you used to construct your plot. • Did the upper or lower quartile change? Why or why not? Be sure to relate your reasons to the data you used to construct your plot.

  28. How many? GRADING SCALE A = 93 – 100 B = 85 – 92 C = 75 – 84 D = 70 – 74 F = 69 or below Grades from a previous test: 97, 94, 93, 91, 85, 84, 77, 77, 75, 72, 70, 65, 40 How many A’s? B’s? C’s? D’s? F’s? How should we organize the data??

  29. How Many? Grades from a previous test: 97, 94, 93, 91, 85, 84, 77, 77, 75, 72, 70, 65, 40

  30. Reporting Frequency • Four different ways to represent the frequency of data: • Stem and leaf plot • Line Plots • Frequency Tables • Histograms

  31. Stem and leaf plots • Defined: A graph that uses the digits of each number to show the data distribution. Each data value is broken into a “stem” and a “leaf.”

  32. Work It

  33. Line Plots • Defined: a graph that shows the shape of a data set by stacking X’s above each data value on a number line.

  34. Work it

  35. Histograms • Defined: a bar graph with no spaces between the bars. The height of each bar shows the frequency of data within that interval. The intervals of a histogram are of equal size and do not overlap.

  36. Histogram vs. Bar graph VS. • “Categorical” data • Bars are separated. • “Continuous” data • Bars touch

  37. Frequency Tables • Defined: a table that lists each item in a data set and the number of times each item occurs.

  38. Own It • SILENTLY work on homework/extra credit until the bell rings! • Remember to SHOW YOUR WORK!

  39. homeroom Read SILENTLY until class begins!

  40. Wednesday, 3-26-14 Bellwork = The box-and-whisker plot above shows the results for period 1’s last report card. • What percentage of students scored at or above a 62? • If there are 24 students in this class, about how many earned higher than 85% this last nine weeks? 50 60 70 80 90 100

  41. Announcements! • Homework is due on FRIDAY • Tutoring Thursday night until 4:15pm (make-up work) • Short quiz TOMORROW!! • 36 days until the math MCT2

  42. Random factoid Cats can’t taste sweet things.
