  1. USING CLIL TO ENHANCE COMPETENCE – BASED LEARNING SYMPOSIUM ON CONTENT AND LANGUAGE INTEGRATED LEARNING Mª Luisa García Gurrutxaga Mila Villa Gallastegi Montse del Nozal Using CLIL to enhance competence based learning

  2. What do we mean by competence? Pr. Philippe Perrenoud, 1997 Faculté de psychologie et des sciences de l'éducation, Université de Géneve: « une capacité d’agir efficacement dans un type défini de situations, capacité qui s’appuie sur des connaissances, mais ne s’y réduit pas” (a capacity to act efficiently in a number of given situations, a capacity based on knowledge, but not limited to it (‘unofficial’ translation from French by the Eurydice European Unit). Using CLIL to enhance competence based learning

  3. What do we mean by competence? From knowledge to competence Definition of knowledge: Oxford English Dictionary: “ the fact of knowing a thing, state, etc or person” Other authors distinguish between four types of knowledge: Know-what, know-why, know-how and know-who In a world in which the stock of factual knowledge is created, distributed and accessed ever more rapidly, people’s need to memorise such knowledge is declining. Instead, they need the appropriate tools for selecting, processing and applying the knowledge required to cope with changing employment, leisure and family patterns. This accounts for the growing tendency in education to develop competences rather than teach factual knowledge. Key Competences, 2002 Eurydice Using CLIL to enhance competence based learning

  4. What do we mean by competence? Every definition of the word competence stresses the following idea: “Learning by doing” starting from knowledge learning to apply it. “Learning by doing” in different contexts. Competences have an integrated nature: a competence integrates concepts, procedures and values or attitudes. KNOWLEDGE APPLICATION INTEGRATED DIFFERENT AND VARIED CONTEXTS Using CLIL to enhance competence based learning

  5. Learning by doing EXPERIENCE the activity, perform it, do it… APPLY what was learned to a similar or different situation: practice SHARE the results, reactions and observations DO APPLY REFLECT GENERALISE to connect the experience to real world situations PROCESS by discussing, analysing, reflecting… Using CLIL to enhance competence based learning

  6. Key Competences in the curriculum Using CLIL to enhance competence based learning

  7. CLIL DEFINITION: It encompasses any activity in which a foreign language is used as a tool in the learning of a piece of non-linguistic curricular content(subject, topic...), where LANGUAGE and CONTENT have a major joint role. European Network of Administrators, Researchers and Practitioners (EUROCLIC, 1990) Using CLIL to enhance competence based learning

  8. CLIL is about CONTENT LANGUAGE INTEGRATED LEARNING is about: • Motivating learners and teachers • Creating quality learning environments • Learning by doing • Working and learning together • Communicating learning • Critical and independent thinking • Building higher order skills • Integrating new developments in education and society (Do Coyle) Using CLIL to enhance competence based learning

  9. Rationale behind CLIL • Learners acquire content and skills and create their own learning. • Contet is related to learning and thinking. Learners have to interpret content their own way and analyse its linguistic demands. • Language needs are related to the learning context, learning through a second or third language implies reconstructing the content through cognitive processes. • Interaction in the learning context is fundamental to this process. This has implications when this learning is taking place in a foreign language. • The relationship between cultures and languages is complex. Intercultural awareness is fundamental to CLIL. It’s rightful place is at the core of CLIL. Using CLIL to enhance competence based learning

  10. CLIL The 4CsTeaching Framework: • content/subject matter/project/theme • communication/language • cognition/thinking • culture/citizenship (Do Coyle) Using CLIL to enhance competence based learning

  11. Where do CLIL and Competence-Based Learning meet? • There is no specific methodology to teach competences. • Competences are acquired as the result of doing different tasks in different contexts. • CLIL gives us a coherent framework to integrate language, cognitive processes, culture awareness and specific knowledge. • Planning through CLIL will get us nearer to developing competences in the learners. • CLIL is about learning by doing: Learning language by using it. Using CLIL to enhance competence based learning

  12. Where do CLIL and Competence-Based Learning meet? A CLIL unit/Theme/ Didactic Unit/Project... CONTENT COGNITION COMMUNICATION CULTURE • Using prior and experiential knowledge • Looking for new information • Reflecting, analysing, selecting information • Thinking skills • Creativity • Justifying choices • Applying new learning in different contexts • Present findings • Re-ellaborate learning for others • Dialogue about learning outcomes • Assessing each other • Global concepts about theme • Beliefs and theories • Values, principles (Do Coyle) Using CLIL to enhance competence based learning
